Most professional athletes like to spend their fortune on luxury houses, extravagant cars, and the finest — often tailor-made — clothing.

James Harrison is a different breed.

In his introductory press conference as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals Tuesday, the veteran linebacker revealed that he spends between $400,000-$600,000 per year “on body work.”

Basically, that’s a fancy way of saying “massages,” and his over-indulgence has led to an interesting nickname.

“I’ve always been what everybody’d like to call — excuse my English — is massage whore,” Harrison said, via Bengals.com.  “I can’t think of nothing else.  They done called me it so long I’m starting to believe it.”

The 35-year-old Harrison knows he’s no young pup, so self-preservation is of the utmost importance.

“I have a hyperbaric chamber,” Harrison said.  “I rent a hyperbaric chamber when I’m in Arizona.  I have massages and I bring people in from New York, Arizona to where I’m at. There’s that cost.  Like I said, I get body work almost every single day except Saturday and Sunday.  I have a homeopathic doctor and I do a lot of homeopathic things.  It’s just a lot, supplements, so on and so forth.”

While many, including the Steelers (who released him after nine seasons), believe he’s broken down physically, Harrison begs to differ.

“I probably haven’t felt this good since, I don’t know, 2008, the beginning of 2009.”

That’d be pretty good, since Harrison earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2008. As long as he can contribute on the field, Cincy should have no issue with his methods.

  • steelers are all homos
  • rowdyguns, pull your pants up and get out of your mother's basement! She's tired of making excuses for her loserof 30 some years... Sum it up; go accomplish something
  • Uh, he's not a Steeler.

    He's a Bengal.

    Can't even troll correctly.
  • so James likes a local; a lot!
  • So if he's on espn's broke 2 segment then we'll know why.
  • I've boon doing almost the same thing for years.. YES it really works
  • Is there a happy ending here?
  • For $600k there should be many happy endings.
  • Probably not an issue for him, but I think about so many stars and athletes who burn though all their money. It seems to me, his "body work" could be addressed for a fraction of the cost with some planning. What he saved he could invest or donate to charity. Having said that, it is no ones business how someone spends their money. I am Just a girl who is good with money and I don't like to waste it.
  • It's also called physical therapy.
  • That's a lot, even if they DO include a BJ at the end...!
  • Please leave Mr. Harrison alone, he worked very hard while here in Pittsburgh, he has a right to feel some pain for the way he was dismissed here. His fans here miss him, and he was well liked and what he does with his money is no ones business,
  • Over a half a million, REALLY!! While I can understand needing to have a specialized regimen, this price tag is way too much. I think he is being grossly overcharged and flat out taken advantage of. We hear about athletes and their bad investments that lead to them becoming financially broke but here's a classic example of how doctors, massage therapist and even personal chefs get in on the gambit as well. These money hungry predators bleed these guys dry and if they don't have good people around them to put a kibosh on the nonsense, they eventually become the sad statistic that seem to plague athletes after retirement.
  • Sounds like he's pulled a Wilt Chamberlain. Remember when Wilt said he had been to bed with 10,000 women. I think they both put in at least one too many zeros.
