Far from a surprise, quarterback Nate Montana, son of 49ers legend Joe, went unselected in this weekend’s draft. The 49ers, though, have decided to throw a bone to the oldest son of the quarterback who helped them win four Super Bowls.

It’s not a contract offer, however, but the team has reportedly sent an invitation to the younger Montana to attend the team’s rookie minicamp in two weeks. It’s only nothing more than a try out, but Montana is hopeful he can turn the opportunity into a contract:

That’s what he and his agent, Marty Magid, are concentrating on now, and their hope is that the 49ers offer him a deal after the minicamp. Magid said other, unnamed teams also have shown interest in Montana and that he was trying to secure an invitation for one of the rookie minicamps being held during the upcoming weekend, May 3-5. “A couple of teams have asked about him,” Magid said. “We’ll find out this week.”

Montana also recently worked out for the Niners during a local pro day for athletes who grew up or played college ball in the area. He was a vagabond in college, playing for four different schools, including his old man’s alma mater Notre Dame and, amusingly, the University of Montana, before winding up at someplace called West Virginia Wesleyan, a D-II school where he finally got a shot to start last season during his senior year. He posted a 51.6 completion percentage.

Montana never started while he was in high school at De Le Salle in Concord. And it was the same for a solid majority of his collegiate career, even while at a JC. Now, he’s milked his name all the way to a shot at the NFL. But we’re willing the wager he sees less NFL camps than he did colleges.

NFC West 2013 Draft Grades

The NFC West is vastly becoming the toughest division in football. The San Francisco 49ers went to the Super Bowl in 2012, Seattle Seahawks were one ill-timed time out call away from facing the 49ers in the NFC Championship game, the Rams did not technically lose a single game against the 49ers in 2012 and the Arizona Cardinals started the season 4-0. Every team got better through...

49ers get South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore

Many people expected the San Francisco 49ers to draft South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore and now they have. The 49ers took Lattimore in the 4th round of this year’s draft. Lattimore will have the chance to take his time in rehabbing his knee after tearing it up last season and he’ll likely become the 49ers starter within the next few years.   Need NFL Tickets? ...

Did the 49ers recover from 2012′s draft mistakes?

The San Francisco 49ers 2012 NFL draft class were heavily criticized after selecting A.J. Jenkins at the bottom of the first-round and having no rookies start out of the class. The criticism was warranted after Jenkins didn’t catch a single pass, and LaMichael James was lukewarm compared to the running backs they passed on in David Wilson and Doug Martin. However, the 49ers 2013...

Ron Jaworski: “Colin Kaepernick has a chance to be one of the greatest QBs of all-time”

ESPN NFL analyst Ron Jaworski believes 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has the chance to be one of the greatest of all-time. “Colin Kaepernick has a chance to be one of the greatest QBs of all-time” – Ron Jaworski — NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) April 28, 2013 While I don’t doubt the talent Kaepernick has,  I think it’s a little premature to come to this kind of conclusion...

How B.J. Daniels Will Fit In San Francisco's Offense

Former South Florida Quarterback B.J Daniels displayed his talents on the field both running with the football, and throwing the football in Tampa. San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh took a chance on the dual-threat quarterback, despite Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, and Scott Tolzien on the roster. From a throwing standpoint, B.J Daniels looks to be the third or fourth quarterback...

49ers sign British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye

There are always a few notable undrafted free agent signings across the NFL, but none carries with it the level of intrigue than that of former British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, who inked a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Okoye burst onto the scene during the super regional combine in Dallas. He’s a massive individual – standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds ...

49ers Invite Nate Montana, Son of Legend Joe Montana, To Rookie Minicamp

It’s hardly newsworthy when an un-drafted quarterback who floated from college to college and wasn’t even a starter on his high school team gets an invite to a NFL minicamp. Shocking, perhaps, but not newsworthy. Where the story takes a twist and becomes a headline on the internet and local newspapers is when that quarterback is the son of an NFL Legend who led the local team...

Offseason grades: NFC West

San Francisco 49ers It was an old school game of tit-for-tat between the 49ers and Seahawks this offseason, and I think the defending NFC champions won the battle. Note the word battle . There's actually a season to be played. The rich got richer and San Francisco beefed up any holes on the roster, while adding depth at key positions and replacing the valuable contributors...

Jim Harbaugh Says About Undrafted Free Agent Lawrence Okoye, ‘Our Creator Created a Beautiful Man’

Jim Harbaugh praised all of his team’s draft picks on NFL Network over the weekend, and he had good reason to — the San Francisco 49ers pulled in an impressive haul this year. But the highest praise he dished out was to a player that went undrafted during the weekend festivities. Lawrence Okoye is a British rugby player turned discus thrower, but Harbaugh compared him to the...

Is Miguel Cabrera this generation’s Hank Aaron?

On June 20, 2003, Miguel Cabrera struck out in his first big league at bat.  He’d get the last laugh however. In the bottom of the eleventh inning the 20-year-old rookie hit a two-run home run to help his then-Florida Marlins to a 3-1 victory over the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Now, I bring that up only to awkwardly segue into this. Friday, the reigning American League MVP turned...

Smith, Knicks head coach Mike Woodson has no intention of meeting with Phil Jackson until he knows if he still has a job. Furthermore, reports say Woodson would prefer Jackson and the Knicks fire him via his agent or phone call. On Wednesday, the coach said he’d like a resolution on...

HLN Video Hey, remember when The Ultimate Warrior died and Nancy Grace brought on Diamond Dallas Page to openly suggest Warrior died from steroids, brought in totally unrelated doctor who said things like “anabolic steroids are probably used by 1% of Americans,” then put together a list of wrestlers who died young to suggest Owen Hart died from drugs? Report: Bucs 'prepared' to draft quarterback at No. 7

The NFL Draft season is busy for analysts and reporters. Many people have feelings on what a team will do while others claim to have sources that also feel what a team will do. Nothing is ever a “for sure” bet.  But several media members go around asking questions or are given information in which they piece together like a puzzle. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is one that does that...

Roy Hibbert: ‘I was wrong’ to call out Pacers teammates

Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert says it what was wrong for him to criticize his teammates in late March. “You know, I think that I should’ve kept my frustrations to myself or just in the locker room,” Hibbert said on “ESPN First Take.” “I will admit that it wasn’t the best thing to do. I’ll learn from that, and I was wrong. There are better ways to handle that...
