Via NFL Trade Rumors:

The idea of eliminating the extra point has come up in recent years as some including Patriots HC Bill Belichick have pointed to the fact that extra points have become almost automatic.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the topic during an interview with Rich Eisen on Monday.

“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said, via NFL.com“I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.

“There’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about. It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.”

Goodell wondered whether or not abolishing the extra point could end up having an inverse effect that would discourage teams from attempting two-point conversions.

The Competition Committee would obviously have to agree to any changes, but it appears as though this could be a topic they at least consider in the coming months.

  • THIS GUY FELL AND BUMPED HIS H E A D sorry ass
  • My grandson's football team gets seven points for a touchdown. No extra point kick. No punts: ball is spotted. No kickoffs, ball is spotted. All because run backs are considered to be dangerous for that age group. I'm for Goodell making a move to peewee football. HAS ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT LETTING THE GROWN MEN WHO PLAY THE GAME MAKE THE RULES? Of course this would be after King Goodell makes the move to PeeWee football.
  • stupid. leave the possibility open for a blocked extra point
  • Please, please consider fining the player that taunts!!!!!!!!!! Penalties for taunting currently only affects the team with a 15 yard penalty. It does nothing to discourage the childish act. Fine the loud mouth player and teach them a lesson, or it will continue to get worse. You can call it the Sherman rule! Bahahah! Seriously though, fine the player for taunting!
  • Yes... Let's take away the kickoff, extra points and put dresses on the QBs. The total destruction of the league is almost complete....
  • Pretty soon we will be watching flag football. What a shame players can't make the rules I know they would rather get hit high than low and end there career.I remember when I was a teen ager football was a real game mean joe greene ray niscke dick butkus that was football. Please give it back king Goddell.
  • Just make them hike it from the 30 (ball spotted at 37) for a 47 yd extra point. That will make it interesting
  • Bilichek and Goodell are idiots if they do away with this. Those 5 misses can determine games. They've changed the kickoff and moved it up 5 yards to keep guys like Devin Hester from running back. You can't hardly hit a qb. Too many ******** changes and rules. Leave the game alone and let them play.
  • Killed the game when they took away the kickoff return took away the excitement of it.Said to many getting hurt bet punt return is next by the way doesn't anyone ever get hurt on punt returns Idiots.
  • Let's see. There's talk about limiting or eliminating the kick off and now the extra point. Are they trying to take the foot out of football?
  • It's the old, "If it ain't broke, fix it" Goodell mentality that's creeped into traditional football since he was named commissioner.
  • The ONLY thing the NFL needs to get rid of is Goodell.
  • Hear, hear!!
  • I Agree. The Goodell era has been ludicrous. It's football not sissy ball. Dirty players really need heavier fines though.
  • Yes I agree get rid of Goodell come fans put it out there what do you think of our now sissy football league.
  • "and you want to add excitement with every play." Is that what you created by moving the kickoff up 5 yards Goodell?!!!! There's nothing like the Seattle fans cheering there assses off before the opening kickoff of the game to watch the ball sail out of the back of the endzone for no return. Great Excitement Has Been Added To Each Game By That Change!!! Moron
  • force the receiving team to field the ball by making it mandatory to kick into the end zone not OVER their heads
  • you've 'wussified' the game enough already, Goddell, so leave the extra-point alone and let them kick-off from the twenty yard line so we can have some run-backs...I'm tired of all the kick-offs going through the back of the end zone...

  • Original Comment:
"In the Goodell "New World Order" there will no longer be tackling in football. Instead, the team with the ball will be allowed to run, unencumbered to the end zone. Upon kickoff, the other team will be allowed to do the same. If any player trips, on his own, on the way to the end-zone that team will forfeit any further opportunity to score. Whereupon the other team receives the ball and runs, unencumbered... Furthermore, the participating teams will accomplish with a degree of difficulty as can be imposed while wearing dresses and high heels. This is to ensure that the team member in possession of the ball will, at some point along the way... trip"
  • This is to ensure that the team member in possession of the ball will, at some point along the way... trip
  • love it you got it right.
  • I tired of it to maybe that gives more time for commercials Took away stopping the clock when a receiver went out of bounds. Refs can't get the damn calls right lets make everything reviewable in a play off or super bowl we the players can make better calls.
  • Stupid is as stupid does....WHY would anyone go for 1 with the probability of losing 2? Leave it alone!!!
  • After a weekend of Conference championships that were highlighted by bad officiating, the NFL Commissioner decides on Monday that he wants to make a quote...about this? Silence and sticking his head in the sand about the officiating? After the Welker pick on Talib? After the blown call on the Bowman grotesque injury/still managing to make a fumble recovery which completely changed the emotional momentum of the game because it wasn't even reviewable? After the blown call on the Marangos roughing the kicker penalty that wasn't called and led to Seattle keeping the ball and scoring the go ahead touchdown? Let me remind everyone that Goodell was egregiously silent after the Junior Seau suicide.
  • That's o.k. It makes up for the last Superbowl Seattle was in with several bad calls them the game. G-d forbid the Stillers(yes spelled correctly) not win a Superbowl they're in.
  • Goodell, you have lost your freaking mind, leave the game alone and you leave the NFL for good, because all you have done is try to destroy football, leave it alone!!!
  • How about if they're inside 20 yd line they have to go 4th down, no 3 pointers, then other team takes over where ever they get ball to...extra point is kinda stupid, especially with kickers we have today...
  • I say keep it but make the player who scored kick the extra point.
  • the extra point issue might consider moving the kick attempt further away or keep the xtra point but not by a kick but a run/pass play. If successful award 2 points if you like.
  • I say get rid of the field goal and make the teams play some real football
  • no extra point kicked. all plays will be run or pass. sorry kickers, only field goals. no field goal try when ball is between goal and 10 yard line. from 10-20 is 1 point. 20-30 is 2 points.30-40 is 3 points.40-50 is 4 points.50-60 is 5 points. 60and over is 6 points. make it interesting.
  • Leave football alone, it's bad enough they changed sudden death and now they want to change the extra point! Why? go back to playing football the way it's been played for years all these changes are making the game soft.
  • A change I would like to see is to allow the scoring team to try for an extra point unless they celebrate the touchdown. If they insist on acting as though they have not scored before, the extra point attempt is forfeited.
  • Figures Mr Whiny Bill Belichek would be the number one name listed as wanting to change the rules. As for taunting, WTF? It has always been part of the game. The best players know how to 'suck it up' and PLAY FOOTBALl!
  • can the xtra pt, TD still = 6 then either go for 2 or kick a 55 yder for 3
  • The first thing the NFL needs to fix is Goodell. IF they let this axx continue he will totally trach this game. Goodell, did you ever hear of the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?
  • why not eliminate the kickoff as well? Just about every kickoff goes out of the endzone anyway. The REAL way to fix this would be to either move the ball back a few yards (which STILL wouldn't have much effect) OR make that a penalty; I think it would be much more interesting if the receiving team were to return the kickoff.
  • Roger Goodell wants to sissy-up the sport of football again. He has all but taken the kick-off return out of the game. Just one more small step until the ball will automatically be placed on the twenty yard line. Let's see, what could we do about that gosh awful punt? Oh, yea, no run back: ball spotted were it is caught. Penalize the kicker if he kicks it into the end zone. Imagine KICKING a FOOTBALL anyway. This is typical Roger Goodell
  • Let the touchdown be an automatic seven points, as it should be. Allow the teams to try for two extra points by run or pass for a total of nine points and if they fail to convert on the two point conversion the touchdown is still a touchdown (7 points) and not reduced to 6 points because of a failed 2 point conversion. And just to make it interesting, have the 2 point conversion try from the 15yrd line or the 25yrd line.
  • make the extra point by running or passing, not by kicking. Reward with 2 points perhaps.
Also, let's make a change - kickoff must be in the field of play, not over the receiving team's heads!
  • Football is as American as our flag and the apple pie. Why do people think things need to change? Do the feel they have to make a mark in history? Can we at least keep one thing sacred? Leave well enough alone. KEEP THE EXTRA POINT. It's the anticipation; is he going to make it? How long the kick is. The extra point is part of the game. JUST LEAVE IT ALONE.
  • Put all the rules back and let em play.
  • Why don't they let them kick and just go to commercial during the kick..........that's what this is about anyway.
  • I think the NFL needs a new commissioner!
  • While drinking with friends about 30 years ago I made the following suggestion. Place the ball on the 10 yard line (17 yard kick) for 1 point, 20 for 2 points, 30 for 3 points and 40 for 4 points.
  • Charlier421 is also correct about the kickoff.
Borrrrrrrrrring! It would be better for the fans
if there are more returns. Lets move the ball back and get more action back into the game.
    Thanks charlier421

    Update: January 21, 2014
I think Mr.Goodell has a good Idea. The extra point in football is as boring as an intentional walk in baseball. After all, sports is about keeping the fans entertained.
  • I remember the super bowl game which I had 6-6 on the pool. The score was 14 nothing in the forth quarter and I felt lost then it happened. Minnesota quarterback got tackled for a safety 16-0. on the next series Minnesota scored a TD and missed the extra point 16-6. I won $350.00 on the pool and these clowns want to take the extra point away. They should worry about the injustice in the ref's calls not being able to review. NFL- Not For Long.
  • yeah keep it but make it like 50-60 yards or make it easier to block by say moving the spot up a couple yards.
bring back the tee for field goals, have an extra point be a 60 yarder and with the tee we could see perhaps 70-75 yarders blasting across the field
  • It is also a time when a blocked kick can result in a game change. Don't listen to the old whiner in NE.
  • kick the extra point with a drop kick like the old days
  • Quit trying to change the game even more. You've changed it enough, the NFL has changed the rules to favor the offence to make scoring easier for the so called excitment of the game.I understand changing the rules for safety's sake.If you keep making it all offence your going to ruin the game.Next you'll want to eliminate the field goals, stop enough is enough.
  • a better idea would be to get rid of goodell and the idiots on the rules committee who think they should reinvent the wheel.an alternative would be,to spot the ball on the 25 yd.line, and make the kickers earn their salary.
  • How about not Its part of the game you always have a chance thats what football is about fighting chances how about we get rid of Goodall
  • Keep the extra point and get rid of Goodell
