PLAYERS: Plaxico Burress
TEAMS: New York Jets

Via This Given Sunday:

Plaxico Burress has kept his name out of the news this season, largely because no team signed him this offseason (after eight touchdowns in 2011 with the Jets). But today, Burress had his name pop up in the news, for yet another off-the-field incident.

Burress received a speeding ticket for going 125 mph in a 70-mph zone in Broward County, Fla. That's a pretty serious traffic violation, regardless of how you feel about the speed limit. But Burress actually got off the hook with the charges related to his ticket after his lawyer, Bradford Cohen, argued that the law cited on Burress' copy of the ticket wasn't the correct law that he was being charged with. Despite the citing officer changing his copy of the ticket after the fact, Burress' copy was incorrect, and the charges were dropped.

Now, I have no idea what law was cited on Burress' copy of the citation, but it couldn't have been that far off from the speeding charge, could it? Something has finally gone Burress' way after he shot himself in the leg in November of 2008 and ended up serving jail time. Ironically, this is the second time (that we know of) where Burress has had traffic tickets thrown out in court. Back in March of 2009, Burress was cited for a myriad of charges (including speeding), but the tickets were thrown out in court when Cohen argued that the officer didn't give Burress any information on how to pay the tickets.

  • I could bring up a lot of thoughts here, I am white I would have been in jail is one. However the law is the law and if I ever need a lawyer in FL I will go see this one for sure.
  • So typical of our legal system today. Law Enforcement has to make sure every 'T' is crossed and 'i' dotted. No wonder corruption abounds in our legal system.
  • this is really a reach, I tell you, Plaxico Burress and his crime and punishment for shooting himself will be news even when he is 80 years old and in a nursing home. Why is that?
Can anybody tell me what Marv Albert was convicted for? He did his crime and his time now he's back into broadcasting and nothing is said about his crime? Why is that?
  • i really dont think this a "race"issue.(pun intended)nobody cares about what Marv did.Plaxico is news worthy,i've been on wrong side of high speed stops before, and i do no,Fl.police dont play.im guessing when he was issued speeding ticket, somebody figured out that 125 in a 70 zone is concidered reckless driving.so it got changed one way or the other.id say plax got lucky.he had a break due.
  • also being in Fl.maybe police remembered how he single handedly thrashed my gators in that bowl game a few years ago.i no i'll never forget that beating.ha,i do wish plax well.
  • It only keeps being an issue because he keeps getting in trouble. Stop doing stupid things!

  • Plax evidently needed someone to read the ticket for him. After all the officer didn't tell him where he could pay his fine???? So he gave it to his lawyer, and discovered that it was a parking ticket whoa! Way to go Plax!!!!! We are all soooooo proud of you. Let’s have high five for "hooked on Phonics” Now all we need to work on Plax is numbers study hard son, I’m sure that one day you will learn ( with the help of your lawyer perhaps) that 120 is more than 70…. The “big” number is not the “good” number in this case Plax..don’t worry you’ll get there!

Ottawa's Lowest Prospect Grade is "Don't Want"

Really. Reads like Bart Scott wrote that one. That adorably blunt detail and many others pertaining to how the Senators scout are contained in this two-part series Garrioch had over the weekend, embedding on the road with Pierre Dorion. The highlight for my money is the inclusion of Dorion's scouting report on Karlsson from the '08 U-18's in Kazan, Russia (a portion...
