One year ago, Steve Weatherford caused a little bit of a stir when he tweeted out a video of New York Giants teammate Prince Amukamara being thrown into an ice cold bath with all his clothes on by Jason Pierre-Paul. The Giants, for whatever reason, took a lot of heat for the rather silly act of hazing. Weatherford ended up taking the most heat from within his own team since he was the one who made it public. This year, a tweet involving Weatherford is much more touching and much more deserving of attention.

Joseph Brennan was a lifelong Giants fan, and the punter that gave him his last great memory of the team. Not everyone gets the chance to obtain an autograph of a player from his or her favorite team, and even when it is just the punter, it’s a special moment. Brennan was suffering from cancer at the age of 79, and the few minutes that Weatherford spent signing his Giants hat was one of his favorite final moments. Weatherford signed Brennan’s favorite Giants hat, and, according to his daughter, it brought immense joy when he put it on. Brennan died just a few days later.

“He smiled when we put that hat on, it was quite amazing,’’ Diane Brennan recounted to The Post.

The family sent out a thank-you through Twitter to Weatherford, and posted the picture of the hat, which hanging at the funeral -- something that obviously touched the Giants punter greatly. Weatherford, unlike many other punters, or even players, has used social media to his advantage, with the exception of last year’s video.

“I know I’m not gonna play this game forever,’’ Weatherford told The Post during a training camp break. “I try to take advantage of the platform and the ability to inspire and motivate people because it’s not like it takes an hour and a half of my time to say ‘Hi’ to a kid or sign an autograph or share my motivation of the day on social media.

“Let’s be honest, I’m a punter. It’s not like I’m that big a part of the team. Granted I feel like I am talented at my position but the fact of the matter is I’m a punter, I play five or six plays a game. The fact people care what I think and I’m able to motivate people by being such a small piece of this team and still carry some weight off the field is cool. I think a lot of that is how accessible I make myself to fans. The fact is I really am living the dream and it’s cool I get to share the fact I’m living the dream with other people.’’

Yeah, we make jokes about the punter, all the time, but Weatherford deserves a lot of praise for what he did off the field, probably more so than the excellent job he has done with the Giants the past two seasons on it. I have to disagree with him when he says ‘it’s not like I’m than big a part of the team,’ in fact he’s a huge asset which goes beyond the lines on the field.

  • Steve is a great guy and a class act. My daughter made him a bracelet before the super bowl last year and he promised he would wear it in the game (along with Lawrence tynes). They did wear them as promised and she was over the moon. She has his autographed picture in her room. She got sick this year and its been rough for her the past 6 months, but every time she sees him on tv or looks at that picture she smiles and is reminded how there are still some great people in this world.
