Is Tim Tebow being blackballed by the NFL? The short and simple answer is that Tebow is not good enough as a player to be a distraction in the NFL, and the media circus around him is a distraction.

There's no question Tebow is one of the biggest media stories as an athlete. Forbes just named him America's most influential athlete. The Onion just named him America's most influential former athlete. He inspired a potential change in Alabama's state law as a high school recruit. He helped lead the Florida Gators to two national championships, including key contributions as a freshman backup. He won the Heisman Trophy.

His play for the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011 showed, though, that he is, at best, a work in progress when it comes to throwing the ball at an NFL level. He posted the worst completion percentage in the league. He was sacked an incredible amount of times behind an offensive line that did not have trouble pass-protecting for Kyle Orton (or for Peyton Manning in 2012). The Broncos tried to get around his limitations as best they could by instituting a run-heavy option offense. Tebow's experience should have made him a good fit there, but as long as he's played in an option-oriented scheme, his option decision-making has been relatively poor.

In 2012, the New York Jets tried to find a use for Tebow in the right niche, as a backup who drew occasional use in goal-line and third-down situations. The result was an unsuccessful season. Having Tebow compete against Mark Sanchez only prevented either player from getting into a rhythm and produced perhaps the league's most dysfunctional offense. Tebow barely threw the ball, but not because he didn't have opportunities to make plays in the passing game. He ran the ball much more than he threw it, but his runs were inefficient. After drafting Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, the Jets released Tebow last week.

And now we come to the point where we were. What Tebow has done at the NFL level indicates he does not do many things that can help an NFL team win games. Could he in time? Perhaps. Notwithstanding his flaws as an NFL quarterback, he remains an incredibly popular player, one who has won some games in the NFL thanks to a low-scoring defense and a healthy dose of luck, along with a personal fanbase that will pepper his team with questions and claim he should be starting.

A good contrast with Tebow came in April's draft. The biggest off-the-field distraction in terms of potential prospects was Notre Dame middle linebacker Manti Te'o. His fake girlfriend story earned him a great deal of media attention, very little of it positive. His presence on an NFL team would inevitably produce jokes aimed at him and the team that drafted him. And where he did he go? Early in the second round, precisely where his on-field football talent indicated he should have gone. The San Diego Chargers drafted him because they thought he could fill the void at inside linebacker created by the loss of Takeo Spikes. That was enough to get him drafted pretty high.

So is Tebow really being blackballed? As we just saw with Chris Kluwe, being good earns a player a lot more leeway than not being very good.

No, Tebow is not being blackballed any more than any player who is not great and whose presence disrupts the NFL's "all football, all the time" mentality.

  • Awww. But I thought all he had to do is pray, and that'll make everything all right ...
  • What a stupid reply...... So much for intelligent responses.
  • If all you had to do was pray to make everything better or GET RID of something that's bringing you down YOU Absinthe1967 would have been gone a long time ago. Tim Tebow started a NATIONWIDE campaign (UNKNOWINGLY I MIGHT ADD) of people kneeling and praying, he is extremely talented athletically, he is NOT into drinking, drugs, illicit affairs or taking performance enhancing drugs to "better" his performance on the football field. He's not afraid of PROUDLY declaring his belief, faith, and inspiration in the Lord Jesus Christ and thru that faith, hard work and talent he has won the Heisman trophy, graduated (with honors) from his college alma mater, took Florida to TWO national championships and has played (whether he EVER plays again) for the NFL. What exactly have YOU done?? Sitting in your parent's basement and making STUPID, MEAN and SMART ALEC responses don't count, get a life you twit, maybe you should try that prayer thing, you might find it works MUCH better then anything YOU'VE done!
And while we're on THAT subject I would LOVE to ask the NFL officials what exactly Tebow has done to be a "distraction"!! How many NFL players JUST THIS SEASON have been arrested for drunken driving, possession of illegal substances, had NUMEROUS affairs on their wives...but yet Tebow who PROUDLY and UNASHAMEDLY shares his faith in God is considered a "liability". And we wonder why this country's morals and values have gotten so screwed up!!
  • tims cristiainty is not in question he needs to get a trainer and go to work on his throwing motion remember faith without work is dead
  • Your comments are spot on. Let's not forget though tragic the Chief player that killed himself in front of the coach. I believe Tim has the distraction tag be cause of his relationship with Christ. There is a hatred for him because of his morals. This is sad.
  • His proselytizing by example is obnoxious. If I want HeyZeus I will go find what there is of him.

Bottom line, Timmy is a college player who can't throw. Its painful to watch and I say that with full appreciation for the fact that I could never play football at all.
  • If Tim can't throw,
What was that gester he made against the pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs to win the game? OH YEA, IT WAS A GAME WINNING PASS OVER THE MIDDLE,
  • Wow... that's was a lot
  • How's that "faith" workin' out for him?
  • Timmy Boo Boo wants the team to revolve around HIM, what worked at UF is not working now.
  • I agree,He's really not an NFL quarterback.I think he would be better as an end. He's big and strong. I wouldn't be afraid to train him for defensive end or outside linebacker. He's young and he can adapt. The boy has talent, but not at quarterback.
  • My question is this?
What is the distraction he created?
Without attacking him personally, what is the distraction?
If you say because he prays, he did that on the sideline, he kneeled on the sideline after scoring a TD to win the game.
My 2nd. Question is this ; If you look at Vince Young, who was a complete and utter failure as a Starting QB at Tennessee. For 3-4 seasons the team tried, & tried to develop him, finally, after he had to be checked into Crazy house.
They gave Vince Young everything he needed to develop, the way you develop a NFL QB.
But, if you look a Tim Tebow, the author of this article says he had a good O Line to block for him.
I can provide you FACTUAL PROOF thats a out and out LIE. If you go back and look at the Denver Bronco's Rooster ALL THE RECEIVERS, WERE OUT ON (IR) for the season, along with numerous other injuries to starting players AND MAY I ADD, a 3-8 record a NEW COACH, John Elway Threw Tim Tebow in to a ALLIGATOR PIT, and his plan was to sit in his up there in his prefect world and laugh & tweet smart ass remarks as he watched Tebow get torn to shreds without any support what so ever. Half the starters sitting out injured, Tebow was left with, AT BEST, a bunch of 2nd string aging back up players, with 1 or 2 1st. Rate players. He was supposed to go down in a pitiful display of dispair. Out of that, Elway's plan was for Tebow to finish out the season 3-13 or 4-12 at best giving Denver a real shot at Drafting Andrew Luck, and either releasing Tebow or trading him. Thats what the Plan WAS.
BUT,AS YOU AND THE REST OF THE FREE WORLD WITNESSED, TEBOW SHOWED YOU THAT YOU AND YOUR VIEWS ON HOW TO WIN, WERE 100% as WRONG AS YOU COULD BE. YOU DON'T have a clue as to what you are talking about when it comes to evaluating talent. You spend your time attacking the person, not the play as a fair and objective observer.
What Tim Tebow, for the Denver Bronco's was nothing short of a miracle. Everyone from Merrill Hodge, to that baldheaded but-buddy of his on ESPN were proven wrong. Real wrong. And thats the facts jack.
If a team would give Tebow, the talent they give every other ROOKIE star QB coming into the league and 6 games, not two years which is the norm. Tebow has something you can't buy, you can't bottle, & you Damn sure can't stop. Tebow has a will to win, a driven urge to compete, that no matter what, he will find away to come out a winner. Those of you that look at stats and say he only had a 48% completion % thats total BS and you know it. Tebow had no one to pass to, all the receivers were out on IR. to even try and say thats his completion % is a total lack of basic comprehension of the game of FOOTBALL. HE HAD NO SUPPORT, HE WAS THROWN TO THE DOGS, ELWAY'S PLAN DID NOT WORK. TEBOW TOOK CHICKENXXXX AND MADE CHICKEN SALAD. You keep your stats, I take players like TOM BRADY, TIM TEBOW, RUSSELL WILSON, THEY HAVE THE ONE THING YOU CANNOT PAY FOR. A BURNING DESIRE TO WIN AT ANY COST.
If a NFL team put Tebow in a starting QB, with the new, spread offense that Tebow ACTUALLY BROUGHT TO THE NFL, A COUPLE F 1st. String WR, a RB, TE, and a half decent defense. There is not but Two or three teams that could beat his team. Because he understands what the word team means. And he has a better record of winning than PAYTON MANNING IF YOU LOOK AT (WHEN IT COUNTS) PLAYOFFS. HE TOOK DENVER TO A 2nd round playoff in only HALF A SEASON, STARTING OUT IN A 3-8 HOLE THAT PUT IN THE SAME HOLE VERY FEW OTHER QB's COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE BRONCO's TO WHERE TEBOW GOT THEM.

OH, AND BY THE WAY' WASN'T IT A PASS OVER THE MIDDLE (the toughest pass to complete in the NFL) THAT TEBOW COMPLETED, TO BEAT THE STEELERS IN THE PLAYOFFS? I THINK IT WAS.
SO, NEXT TIME YOU START IN ON HIM PRAYING, AND EVERY OTHER EXCUSE EXCEPT THE FACTS OF WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN DENVER AND NYJ TIM TEBOW WAS NEVER GIVEN A CHANCE, NOT EVEN HALF A CHANCE. GIVE TEBOW THE TEAM AND TIME THEY GAVE MARK SANCHAZ AND LETS SEE THE OUT COME. THERE WOULD BE 2-3 Superbowl rings on Tebows fingers if he had only half the talent surrounding him that Mark was given. Evaluate the play, not the player, and it all gets real real clear, Tebow is a winner, it don't matter how, as long as he gets you a W thats all that matters at the end of the day, W's vs L's thats what he does is WINS.
  • If Tebow was that good he would be playing somewhere. But what I want to know? if he was a ATHIEST would all of you be coming to his rescue.
  • Kongfish,
I know you wanna have Timmy's babies and all but get your facts straight so you don't look stupid. Vince Young was the rookie of the year and made two pro bowls before he torpedoed he's career, and the Bronco's were 1-4 when Timmy was named starter. He also had the same receivers Peyton turned into pro bowlers. Bottom line, Timmy sucks Balls
  • Aaron Rodgers constantly completes passes to 5+ receivers a game. Does that mean the packers have 5+ starting quality receivers? No. They are also constantly riddled with injuries and Rodgers gets sacked more than any other quarterback yet he still somehow manages to win games and constantly be selected to the pro bowl. But your right it is definately the team's fault that Tebow is a terrible quarterback when compared to any other quarterback in the league. Stop using the fact that just because he's a good person and wears his religion on his sleeve as justification to yell at teams and tell them to give this extremely overrated quarterback another try.

  • God probably has something more Important for Tim to do, so immature individuals like u can sit and criticize him some more. But, Brother go ahead because I am going to let you in on a little secret, the more you bad mouth Tim T. The more rewards he is building when he goes to heaven, you and all like you are building that man a beautiful crown in glory. So, keep it up! Tim will appreciate the Crown your Building him, brother.
  • Brilliant!
  • I bet if he was gay or Muslim you wouldn't be making fun!
  • Absinthe1967,
You just don't have a clue, do you?
Since you can't attack the PLAY, you attack the person. The is what someone does when they are LOSING the debate over an issue. Thats rule number ( 1.) in debating 101 you bonehead.
Haters like you that can't see the facts are the reason this country is being sucked down the tubes, all mouth, and no motion.
  • No, he's a Christian, not a magician. Once you become a Christian, you follow the Lord, wherever He leads you. Peter got crucified upside down, Paul was beheaded and Stephen was stoned to death. Being blackballed would be small potatoes, very small. And, if everyone loves you, you are probably not doing it right in the first place. Not everyone loved Jesus.
If Tim is sent to do things other than football, he'll be disappointed, but he'll go where God wants him. That's what non-believers cannot grasp-we don't just pray and the giant Santa Claus in the sky gives us what we ask for. The pot doesn't get to ask the potter, "Why did you make me like this?"
  • If you can't get what you want from praying, what's the point of praying?
  • It is true, piddles, that many people pray to get what they want from God. The point of praying, however, is just the opposite...to give to God what He wants from you.
  • I think the time has come to "blackball" the NFL. What are these people afraid of? Will one decent law abiding player in a league full of egotistic drug users really hurt them? What a bunch of losers.
  • If you can't get what you want from praying, what's the point in praying?
  • those losers are working and bringing in a big fat pay check.
  • Big fat paycheck? BFD...still doesn't buy them class, morals or character. But then again..most of the idiots that idolize those knuckle dragging neanderthals are only worried about not spilling their beer and getting home from the games without a DUI. The paycheck earned doesn't define the character of the individual dumbass. You should go take some of yours and use it to buy a little intelligence.
  • Teboo Boo has done little but grab PR; managers, and coaches, do not need a showman, they need PLAYERS.
  • Tebow has been successful every where he has played, as someone else said , he doesn't do drugs, get DWI's, beat his wife, take PEDs , He IS a great role model, HE does NOTHING to create any distraction. It is the media and the media only did it in NY because it was obvious the starting quarterback shouldn't be starting and Tebow deserved the chance the Jets said they would give him but only because they have a "head" coach who is really only a defensive coordinator and an owner that is weak and ineffective , he was even given the chance to start one game. The JETS ruined Tebow. Well, the JETS will get what they deserve, they will finish last in the league , get the number one draft pick and have another quarterback controversy because they will have Geno Smith ( who by then will prove his immaturity and be another cancer on the team ) and there sitting at number one will be Johnny Football - so clueless Woody Johnson will have himself another quarterback controversy and I can't wait !!!!!!
  • Start with: He isn't married and continue correcting yourself.
  • If you had an education beyond the third grade , you would get the fact that the wife part was a reference to other players in the league not Tebow, so what's your brilliant take ?
  • Just because someone is a good role model doesn't make them a good football player. These comments aren't even related to football or stats they just keep spewing out the same crap about Tim Tebow is a good person and a christian and therefore he should get to start on an NFL team. I know a lot of good people that are christians that look like a maimed antelope when they try running or playing a sport. Lets use your logic though and draft them because the NFL is about who's the best person/christian not who's best at football.
  • The word from Denver was that they had to totally make adjustments for TT to be the quarterback. If you work at a company and too many people have to make adjustments for you to be employed there - don't expect to stay very long. He was only put in at qb because Denver was 1-4.
  • Folks need to speak up for Tim cause the media will only make him look like a looser which he is not. He is a good person much better than many a player I have seen over the yrs. Wake Up America!!
  • But he can't throw. All things aside, that is a requirement for a Pro quarterback.

His proselytizing by example is obnoxious. If I want HeyZeus I will go find what there is of him. Bottom line, Timmy is a college player who can't throw. Its painful to watch and I say that with full appreciation for the fact that I could never play football at all.
  • This article is poorly written. It is obvious the author does not like Tim Tebow, "The Broncos tried to get around his limitations" "Jets tried to find a use for Tebow in the right niche..." I didn't realize these football organizations were more into charity than making money. I think this is a case of "They hate ya because they ain't ya." Boo!
  • He can't throw. It painful to watch and I don't like the guy even without ever met him, quite obviously.
  • Uh ??? if you can't put a sentence together , don't bother posting anything
  • I seriously don't think Tebow is being blackballed. Tebow def has a huge media and faithful following that some NFL tems would find a distraction. I am a huge fan of Tebow and believe he could be a great NFL player on the right team. Where he can have a chance to flourish and work on his mechanics and come in about 2 to 3 years and help a team contribute to win. I can truly see two senerios working for Tebow. the first is in New England. I am a die hard Patriots fan and I am no worried about any kind of media frenzy following him here. Bill Belicheck can calm down and extinguish any media attention that would come. Look at what he did with Corey Dillon, Randy Moss, Albert Haynesworth and Chad Johnson. I believe Tebow will be able to learn from Brady and that team and no one I don't care who you are will try and call for Tebow to come in as long as Brady is under center, so there is no worries there. The second option for Tebow is merely from a financial stand point. If he goes to Jacksonville it would help that franchise tremendously!!! The jaguars are a team hard pressed to sell tickets and sell out their games. I live in Florida and the Jaguars games are always blacked out unless they play against a good team with a big following or when Tebow comes to town to play against them. I am not complaining because I am a Patriots fan and I was able to get tickets in Jacksonville for $25 last season. There were more Patriots fans than Jaguars fans and it was like welcome to " South Foxboro ". Anyways Tebow would make a brilliant business move to sell seats and Jaguars Gear for their new owner! ....... just saying!!!!
  • Tebow creates the controversy that swirls around him by making a BIG DEAL about his religion. Which should have nothing to do with playing football. If he was any good, it wouldn't matter. Teams will put up with just about anything to win games. But, as a an NFL QB, Tebow has been abysmal.

So, he should try something he may be better suited for. Perhaps Tim would be welcomed at seminary, where interceptions and wounded ducks are not a problem.

The lesson here is: If you are lucky enough to be drafted into the NFL and your talent is marginal at best-- keep your fascination with imaginary creatures and fairy tales to yourself. You may stick around a bit longer.
  • The folks praying for Tebow to succeed are the same people who whine and pray to God to kill President Obama. Wonder why they never get their prayers answered?
  • Tebow played great at UF, That worked out great but as far as the NFL it's college anymore. He's not a TEAM PLAYER1 HE'S A TEBOW PLAYER!!!I don't care if you pray, dance,or do back flips just do what's best for your TEAM.I think he's very intelligent and calculating so it's no surprise were talking about him, That's what he's all about. Have no fear Mr. Tebow your mommies nipple is near!!Grow up, you had your chance when the world was watching you and you chocked, cried, and prayed, got a second chance in NY did the same thing!! Remember the word TEAM, NOT TEBOW .... Not everything revolves around you. Good luck, hopefully wherever you go will have your little blakey, and your pacifier so you don't need to give your speeches. Just do your job. p.s. They have band aides for your boo-boo's
  • First – thanks so very much to the author for finally saying what the rest of the sane world has long known: Tim Tebow failed in the NFL because of his performance.

Second, the distraction part of his legacy is evidenced in the sycophants who ALL CAP their foaming defense of this media phenomenon. To argue that Teblow was cut because of his religious beliefs is considerably ridiculous. Take a look at how many Christian players there are, kneeling, praying, pointing skyward, thanking Jesus, etc. after every big play. The NFL is full of Christian athletes who make a living as professional football players because of their talent - talent Tim Tebow lacks, plain and simple.

Pro football, like all professional sports, is about winning. If the football minds across 32 teams believe Tim Tebow can’t help them win, then I trust their judgment over raging, born again, conspiracy freaks who believe Tim Tebow is the savior of America and that Christians are some oppressed minority.
  • Will you christian wackos still support him when it comes out hes gay.
  • Lefty 1023,
First off, only 83% of the county believes in GOD, so by your own written words only 18% of America is not a wacko, (but that statement can't be right, until you clarify what you other 18% believe in, and I have a feeling that the answer to what you believe in would turn this comment reply section into a comedy forum, for people with an IQ in single digits.
    Lets compare what LEFTY 1023 has done with your life to what Tebow has done with his life;
1.) Lefty's accomplishments; unsuccessfully stole his mothers $12.00 bottle of lotion, to use in his basement troll hole as a substitute for a girlfriend.
2.) Tim Tebows accomplishments; (2) national championships in college, 2 time Heisman trophy winner,(youngest ever) 1.st. Round Draft pick in the NFL , took a team with a LOSING RECORD, to the playoffs his first season, and won a playoff game against A former SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.
3.) Lefty: won the world championship for having the softest left hand for a man. Because of your mama's $12.00 bottle of stolen lotion.
So see Lefty, it is real easy to attack "someone" when you are fighting a losing fight. Lets see if you can make a winning argument on your point, using on real factual statements and evidence. Then you might some creditability to your dimwitted statements,
  • Here's some real factual evidence http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/13200/tim-tebow Tebow is at best a backup. He can't handle the NFL hence his horrendous qb rating/stats. And just becuase he had one good season doesn't make him a great player. Do you remember Shaun Alexander?
  • If Tim would just go out and get arrested for a DUI, or beat hell out of a girl friend, then he would stand a better chance at being accepted as an NFL player by the news media and many fans.
