Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh says that to his knowledge he has “never hurt anyone through playing the game of football.”

Before I jump into this, let me just say that GQ does some fantastic work when it comes to sports and sports writing. To mark the upcoming NFL season the magazine’s September issue features nice photo spreads of both Cam Newton and Victor Cruz as well as an in depth article on Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh. The Suh article is absolutely worth reading because it contains a lot of gems on the tough player who many have pegged as the dirtiest player in the league.

Through this article we find out that:

  • During the offseason Suh still lives with his parents in his old bedroom — it’s a cultural thing.
  • His sistes is his manager and gate keeper.
  • Suh started off playing soccer (as did his sister).
  • He really doesn’t like to talk a lot but when he does he’s thoughtful and he’s a good pitchman for the products he endorses.
  • His great-grandfather was 7’3 but his father is 5’8

The part that stuck out to me was when the writer asked Suh about concussions. And Suh said:

“I think concussions are really important, but I don’t think if you look back at any of my hits, there’s nothing in the hit that would cause concussions. Maybe whiplash. That’s not because of me, that’s because somebody doesn’t know how to take a hit. I’m not doing helmet-to-helmet hits. I might hit somebody under their chin because I hit them in their chest and I rise up, because that’s how we were taught to play football. Hit them and run your feet through. Eventually you’re going to come up through the person. Concussions, I don’t think, really fall into my category.”

I…I…I… I don’t know what to say. Suh seems like a very smart guy so this may be something he tells himself increase his REM sleep (something he and his trainer are working on). But obviously it rings false and the writer, rightfully, questions why Suh isn’t more up on his knowledge about this given his role in the league. But we know many players are in denial because it’s coping mechanism to stay in the game. I can’t speak for Suh but that was my first thought. Related Posts:
