Nearly a decade later, Geno Smith discusses 2013 draft fiasco

After toiling through the last six years of his NFL career as a backup, quarterback Geno Smith had a remarkable resurgence in 2022. Once labeled a bust, Smith traded in one moniker for another, earning the PFWA comeback player of the year award after posting the best season of his nine-year career. 

Having transformed how the league perceives him now, Smith also cleared the air about another long-standing misconception that he left the first day of the 2013 NFL Draft early because he was upset about falling outside the first round.

Appearing on "The Pivot" this week, Smith admitted he was disappointed at the draft, but the night wasn't only about him. It happened to be his mother's birthday, and instead of sticking around, he didn't want to spoil her day. 

"I always think things are bigger than me. I don't want it to be about me, so we left to go enjoy the rest of my mom's birthday," Smith said. "On the outside looking in, it looks like, 'you're trying to ditch the draft,' or, 'you're upset,' which is cool." 

Entering the 2013 draft as arguably the top available quarterback on the board, Smith fell to the New York Jets in the second round. After the first round, Smith said he was leaving and wouldn't return for the second and third rounds of the draft the following day. Smith ultimately had his moment on stage with commissioner Roger Goodell on day two of the draft. 

Following the trade of Russell Wilson, the Seahawks gave Smith his first opportunity as a full-time starting quarterback since making 13 starts for the Jets in 2014. Smith responded by taking full advantage of his chance by leading Seattle to a 9-8 mark and a playoff berth. 

Making all 17 regular season starts, Smith recorded career highs in completion percentage (69.8), passing yards (4,282), and touchdowns (30). 

A free agent this offseason, Smith said things are "looking very good" regarding a new deal with the Seahawks. 

"We think we can get some things done, but obviously, those things take time," Smith said.
