The 2011 NFL leader in receptions with 122 appears to be staying put with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. A report released Monday afternoon indicates that the New England Patriots will use their franchise tag on wide receiver Wes Welker. Welker is scheduled to become a free agent on March 13, but reportedly the Patriots will use their tag on him as they’ll have until March 5 to make it official.  If Welker were to sign elsewhere, New England’s lasting memory of Welker would have been his infamous drop in Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants. With just about four minutes to go in the game with New England holding a 17-15 lead, Welker dropped a wide-open pass as if he were to catch it he would have landed inside of New York’s 20-yard line and would have likely iced the game for the Patriots.  Thankfully for Patriot fans, that does not appear to be the last memory of Welker.  In all four seasons with Brady, Welker has 100-plus receptions and since 2007, he has led the N...

Reflecting on the Superbowl a week later

After the game ended I avoided exposing myself to sports news for a few days.  So it wasn’t until about Wednesday that I realized people were blaming Wes Welker for the loss.  That’s crazy to me.  As the play in question was happening, I though to myself that the throw was too high, and it never crossed my mind again.  Welker is a tiny guy.  I’ve met him a couple times...

Wes Welker takes the high road

Patriots receiver Wes Welker has taken a lot of heat in Boston and beyond since the Super Bowl. He hasn’t been heard from since a teary-eyed press conference following the game where he laudably took the blame for the loss, even though we feel he took a little too much blame. Welker broke his silence…

52 year Patriots fan abandons ship for the Steelers. And he has some advice for Bob Kraft: Fire Belichick and Trade Tom Brady! He makes some great points. It really is crazy how the Patriots only use one quarterback and never use their back ups. What is Belichick doing? And the “one cent” system definitely doesn’t work all the time.  I agree, if only we put “Altachinko”...

Tom Brady 2011 Season - All 39 TD’s (by vcmoss81)

Tom Brady 2011 Season - All 39 TD’s (by vcmoss81)

What to do

Tom Brady had two touchdowns and three interceptions in his last two games. Drives tended to sputter out and Brady knew he had to force some balls. There are only two answers to this problem. One, Brady is becoming worn out, or two, Brady needs more help. I think the first place to look is at the defense. It looks like the Patriots will try and draft Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina...

Stephen Colbert sounds off on Jeremy Lin (Video)

The Colbert Report was off last week, so it didn’t have the chance to make wisecracks about the things happening in a realm we all go Stephen Colbert for: sports. But Colbert did all his catching up on Monday night’s edition of The Report, diving all in on the hoopla surrounding one Jeremy Shu-How Lin. “This kid has single-handedly done the unthinkable —...

Philadelphia Eagles: Will They, Should They Bring in Randy Moss?

Brady kept Moss in line, the Eagles would have a harder time. Jim Rogash/Getty Images Randy Moss has announced his desire to return to the NFL. He is one of the greatest talents the sport has ever seen and one of the game’s most dangerous weapons. But it was only when he chose to be. Reports have already surfaced, at least superficially that the Eagles were one of four teams...

Philadelphia Eagles 2012 NFL Draft Prospect: Is Brandon Weeden the Quarterback of the Future?

After the 2010 season, the Philadelphia Eagles thought they had their quarterback of the future. Michael Vick had revived his career by unofficially finishing second in the NFL MVP voting (Tom Brady won the award unanimously but most people agreed that Vick would have been second) and leading the Eagles to the NFC East division title. But Vick struggled in 2011. His turnovers increased...

Vote: Which New England Sports Couple is Most Intriguing?

Much of the recent relationship spotlight around Boston has been focused on Gisele Bundchen's defense of her man and New England Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady after his Super Bowl loss. But, contrary to popular belief, Brady and Bundchen aren't the only well-known sports couple in town. As a matter of fact, just last week Tom's younger sister Julie Brady got engaged...
