On a day when the entire sports world is enveloped by the madness that is the NFL offseason crammed into a week’s time, one player on the New Orleans Saints made headlines on Tuesday for a totally different reason. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma, a former player at the University of Miami, announced a donation of $450,000 to his alma mater on Tuesday afternoon. The school announced that it is recognizing Vima’s donation by naming the University of Miami football player’s lounge will be named in his honor. Fans should not be surprised by the generosity of Vilma. He started the “Jonathan Vilma Foundation” several years back, with the proceeds from his organization going toward the creation of a charter school in Haiti that will teach students in kindergarten through high school. On a day that is highlighted by tons of NFL player activity, it is nice to see a good story like this come from the home team.
