Full back Heath Evans joined the Saints in 2009 after being signed as an unrestricted free agent from the New England Patriots. At the time the Saints were looking to upgrade at the position and add a better pass catching full back then what was on their roster, leading to the release of Mike Karney.
In 2009 Evans played in the Saints’ first six games, scoring three touchdowns, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury in their October game against the Miami Dolphins and was placed on the injured reserve list. The Saints spent the rest of the season using a rotation of tight end David Thomas and tackle Zach Strief as make-shift blocking full backs.
Last season Evans seem to disappear from the Saints offense appearing in sixteen games, with six starts, rushing twice for one yard and catching seven passes for 41 yards with one touchdown.
As a lead blocker his impact was questionable as well as the Saints rush offense ranked near the bottom of the league, granted top rushers Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush did miss most of the season with injury.
Evans is set to become a free agent this year but not-unlike others is caught up in the current state of the expiring CBA agreement. Currently the NFL and NFLPA are in Washington in an attempt to get a new deal done, today is the last day of a seven day extension.
