New Packers OT Jared Veldheer reportedly tests positive for COVID-19

It appears veteran offensive tackle Jared Veldheer won't be making history this weekend.

ESPN's Field Yates (h/t Rob Demovsky) reported on Wednesday that Veldheer has tested positive for the coronavirus and won't be cleared from the reserve/COVID-19 list for Saturday's NFC divisional-round playoff game versus the Los Angeles Rams.

The 33-year-old started for the Indianapolis Colts this past Saturday but reverted to the club's practice squad following the 27-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills. That allowed any club to sign Veldheer, which the Packers did after they lost David Bakhtiari to season-ending knee surgery.

Veldheer was on track to become the first individual to ever play for two teams in the same postseason. Such a transaction is typically prohibited but was made possible due to relaxed rules for fielding squads during the campaign held amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Demovsky added the Packers currently have no "high-risk close contacts" linked with Veldheer's reported positive test, in part because the team converted a large media auditorium into a media room for the offensive line. Veldheer did practice with Green Bay on Tuesday, though, meaning everyone associated with the team's traveling party will be holding their breaths and waiting for the results of COVID-19 tests through the start of the weekend.

Barring the discovery of a so-called "false positive" result, anybody added to the reserve/COVID-19 list after Wednesday afternoon would be unavailable to play on Saturday.
