As the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants get set to start another season, I wanted to examine the TE position and particularly the two main players; Martellus Bennett and Adrien Robinson. If all goes well and if you believe everything you read, the Giants could have the most explosive TE tandem in the NFL. However; in reality you’re dealing with a player in Bennett who has underachieved, due to a lack of playing time behind Pro Bowler Jason Witten and a player in Robinson who is a rookie and played in a system at Cincinnati that didn’t utilized the TE position in the passing game. Regardless; these two players intrigued me, so I needed to take a closer look at them.

The Giants signed Bennett this off season to a 1 year deal. The 6'6", 270-pounder (currently weighing 291 lbs) possesses prototypical tight end size. Bennett offers an element that the Giants have been missing for some time at the tight end position. Bennett will benefit from the attention paid to Victor Cruz, who certainly attracts a crowd when lined up in the slot position; and also Hakeem Nicks on the outside as well. Bennett has had a history in his short career of not being able to catch the ball consistently. However; Coach Pope and Head Coach Coughlin believe Bennett will become a better receiver within their system.

Bennett’s major contribution should be as a blocker. He is powerful at the point of attack and has the frame and length to match up with linemen, as well as with linebackers. With the addition of youth along the line and also moving Diehl from LT to possibly RT, With Bennett added to the mix, expect the running game to improve significantly in 2012.

Adrien Robinson was drafted in the 4th round in the 2012 draft and many fans and sports writers (me included) scratched our heads and wondered what in the world was GM Jerry Reese thinking. After all, in college Robinson only managed to catch 29 receptions for 434 yards and 5 TD’s during his four years at Cincinnati. Then to add more fuel to the fire, GM Reese, a man not known for spouting hype, invoked the name of super-athletic pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, referring to Robinson as “the JPP of tight ends.”

In the beginning, I was not thrilled with this selection despite GM Reese’s comparisons of JPP, however; that slightly changed once I saw film of Robinson during the Giants rookie minicamp in which Robinson displayed the talent and athleticism found in 1stround selections. Robinson made several circus catches during the first two days and provided a glimpse of ability that many in the Giants organization are excited about. Giant’s offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbrideis thrilled with this kid, but understands that he is still raw and needs time to develop.

Coach Gilbride added “His athleticism, backed by a 4.51-second 40-yard dash time, is so stunning that he fools a lot of coverage with his deceptive speed and strength. Coach Pope loves this kid’s makeup and of course his size (6’4/264lbs) and added “This kid went under the radar during his college career and never really was utilized the way he should have been. His long arms and his athletic ability is a major plus and let’s not forget his blocking”.

So what should we expect from these two TE’s? Can we expect these two TE’s to meet and/or exceed all their expectations; or are we being misled by the hype that will never happen? Well, I have always been a guy who sees the glass half full, so I am banking on this tandem to develop and possibly becoming the best in the NFL.  Let me know what you think! Do you think that the tandem of Bennett and Robinson could develop into the best in the NFL or do you think that these two are only one-dimensional (blockers).
