The NFL Draft is drawing near and excitement is building. The New York Giants have made some great moves throughout free agency and they should seek to continue rebuilding their roster with key additions through the draft. With that in mind, let’s open up the mailbag and dive in! I know the Giants have JPP, Mathias Kiwanuka and Robert Ayers now, but is there any chance Damontre Moore starts in 2014? - Jeffery (Hackensack, NJ) Moore should get a chance to compete for a starting job in camp, certainly. Kiwanuka is getting up there in age (31 years old), Jason Pierre-Paul’s health remains a concern and while they did just sign Robert Ayers, his performance as a pass rusher has been quite underwhelming to date. The odds are stacked against Moore, being the least experienced player in a collection of defensive ends who appear to be slotted on the depth chart in front of him. And knowing Perry Fewell’s defense, it isn’t vital for Moore to start to have a major impact. Just ask Mike Patterson, who was a key factor in the Giants’ improved run defense last season and ranked among the league’s best defensive tackles, per Pro Football Focus. Despite ridiculous knocks on his speed heading into the NFL Draft, Moore proved last season that he is a lethal pass rusher with good technique to force his way into the backfield and make a play (just see his two blocked kicks on special teams). What ever happened to Jermichael Finley? We need a tight end bad! - Tommy (Bayside) Little has been said about Jermichael Finley since free agency opened up. He’s still yet to be cleared for physical contact, so I think most teams, the Giants included, have moved on from Finley until that happens. With good reason. Finley is coming off a very serious neck injury and fusion surgery; he may never come back from that. Look for the Giants to go into the draft with a tight end on their mind. Whether that means Eric Ebron in the first round, Troy Niklas in the second or maybe C.J. Fiedorowicz, a guy I really like out of Iowa, in the fourth round. They will not leave Radio City Music Hall without a tight end. What is the ceiling for this group of Giants cornerbacks with the addition of DRC? - Adam (Blairstown, NJ) There is no ceiling for the Giants’ cornerbacks as a unit. If DRC, Prince Amukamara and company play up to their very best, it’s going to be very hard for opponents to pass against the Giants. In a league so highly dependent on the passing game, that could make the G-Men unbeatable. That said, we still need to see these guys in uniform and on the field before I’m willing to laud them for their greatness. On paper, everything seems fantastic. But what happens if the Giants get Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie circa Philadelphia rather than Arizona or Denver? A lot of DRC’s issues in Philly were a result of scheme fit, but you just never know. You’d like to think Prince Amukamara and Trumaine McBride continue to develop, but what happens if they take a step back? Can Walter Thurmond and Jayron Hosley pick up the slack? A lot of factors are going to play into the overall performance of the Giants’ cornerbacks. As of right now, however, there is a very positive outlook for the defense as a whole heading into the 2014 NFL season. Wants your question(s) to be included in the Giants mailbag on cover32.com?
