What’s one of the biggest yet unsung for a top NFL offense? An athletic, playmaking tight end. And unfortunately for the New York Giants, they appear to be lacking in that department. The Giants currently have Adrien Robinson, Kellen Davis, Larry Donnell, Daniel Fells and rookie Xavier Grimble on the roster. None of those men, however, look like they have the potential to be a Jimmy Graham or Tony Gonzalez. Yes, general manager Jerry Reese once deemed Robinson the “JPP of tight ends” but time is wearing thin for him to live up to those lofty expectations. Robinson has just three games played and zero catches to show for himself thus far. Donnell and Fells look like a major longshots at this point in their career. Davis is a blocking tight end with minimal success as a receiver (50 receptions for 561 yards and 12 touchdowns in six NFL seasons). And then there’s Grimble. The highly touted USC recruit never performed to par during his time with the Trojans, but the undrafted free agent has shown glimpses of promise this spring driven by the inspiring play of Giants legend Mark Bavaro. If Grimble can make an impact, he could turn out to be a huge steal for the G-Men—they’ve had their fair share of success with undrafted free agents in the past (see: Victor Cruz, Chase Blackburn and Mark Herzlich). The tight end is expected to be an extremely valuable piece in offense coordinator Ben McAdoo’s scheme much in the way Jermichael Finley was with the Green Bay Packers. It’s their hope that a talented asset will reveal himself in training camp and add another offensive weapon to the team’s arsenal alongside wideouts Cruz, Rueben Randle and rookie Odell Beckham.
