The New York Jets released Defensive Tackle Sione Pouha today, in a move that should surprise nobody. He is over 30 years old, has back issues and the Jets spent a 3rd round pick on his long term replacement in 2011, Kenrick Ellis. When healthy last season, Ellis was playing very well and should help fill the void left by Pouha, along with Mike DeVito who the team is making a strong push to bring back. Damon Harrison will also see a bigger role in the defensive line rotation.  Pouha’s release frees up nearly 4 million dollars in cap space, giving the Jets some needed financial flexibility in the coming months.  So what’s next? The team will try to lock down DeVito before he takes free agency visits. Kansas City, New Orleans and New England will all have interest along with probably a few other teams. They are also in pursuit of Chicago Bears quarterback Jason Campbell, who would be a better pick-up than Brady Quinn. In order to free up cap space, the Jets can release Tim Tebow and work on finalizing a restructure with wide receiver Santonio Holmes. A few other tidbits Dustin Keller is drawing minimal early interest in the free agency market. It still is unlikely that he returns to New York. The Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions are in pursuit of LaRon Landry, which will hurt the Jets chances of bringing him back. They simply cannot afford him if he gets out of the 3-4 million per year range. Shonn Greene is a goner, with Denver and Green Bay both showing interest. If the Jets want to lock down Victor Butler, they’d be wise to do it before he takes multiple visits and his price-tag is driven up out of their range.
