New York Jets running back Mike Goodson was suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season by the NFL on Monday for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million contract with the Jets in March of this year. Goodson was arrested in May and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a loaded gun and possession of a hollow point round. The case is still working its way through court but the NFL has stepped in and suspended him, most likely for the marijuana portion of the charge. Goodson was AWOL for all of training camp for unspecified reasons but returned to the team on Monday, only to then be suspended. He will be able to practice with the Jets until Thursday when the Jets play the Eagles in the preseason finale for both teams. The 26-year-old back had the following to say about his situation: “I’ve been away from the team to take care of some important personal things. The time was helpful to me and now that I am back, I am going to do everything I can to contribute to the team. I appreciate all of the support from the Jets organization and I’m thankful to be back with my teammates.” Goodson will be able to return to the Jets on September 30, and the first game he’ll be eligible for is the team’s Monday night game in Atlanta on October 7. The Carolina Panthers selected Goodson in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in Carolina before being traded to the Oakland Raiders last season. He played 12 games for the Raiders in 2012. Goodson has played in 40 games during his career and has ruched for 722 yards on 160 carries (4.5 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He also has 59 career receptions for 524 yards and a score.
