The simple truth is that this is nonsense (and a whole lot of other words you can't say around your kids). The NFL broke its own rules and provided an unfair advantage to the New York Giants, which thankfully proved useless. The NFLPA can't do anything about that advantage and any possible lost wages because they waived their right to continue the chain of lawsuits and court battles when they signed the new CBA.The players have no one to blame but themselves for giving in. That doesn't change the fact that this is an injustice for all the players as well as the staff of two particular teams.Judge David Doty waited until today to hold a hearing on whether or not the NFLPA could sue the NFL for what happened in 2010 (the infamous "uncapped" year that wasn't). It was perfect timing, and if you're a fan of tinfoil hats you'll be claiming some grand conspiracy by the NFL to hide this ruling in a mess of Black Monday tweets and posts. The truth is probably far simpler - a judge knew he had no choice in the case, but the average fan either wouldn't understand all the legal mumbo-jumbo that prevents him from ruling in favor of the NFLPA (and therefore, the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins) or would expect him to rule in favor of "justice," regardless of the CBA. He wanted to minimize the impact on his career, so he waited to rule until a day when most fans wouldn't notice.Yes, technically the judge's ruling is correct, and he couldn't actually rule any other way. However, that doesn't mean that what the league did to the Cowboys and Redskins is right, and it doesn't mean that there wasn't collusion. The NFL escaped justice through shrewd planning and bargaining, or maybe just dumb luck, and the teams aren't going to do anything about it now (after all, they were playing for the division just 12 hours earlier). It's up to the fans to prevent any further mischief. We now have a second voice with this growing social media obsession in our country. Between that and boycotting NFL products when something happens, we can shape future events. Watch closely, and read between the lines with every move.
