Brandon Weeden will be holding a clipboard on Thursday night when his Cleveland Browns take on the Chicago Bears in what will be the preseason finale for both teams. Weeden, the Browns’ second-year quarterback, will be one of many starters to rest as the team prepares for their Opening Day contest against the Miami Dolphns. After saying that he would consider playing his starters for 10-12 plays on Tuesday afternoon, Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski revealed that only a select few starters will see a mere snap during their game. With veteran quarterback Jason Campbell drawing the start under center, he will have wide receiver Josh Gordon at his disposal. Gordon, who will miss the team’s first two games due to a substance abuse violation, will play alongside second-year wide receiver Travis Benjamin. Campbell has played relatively well thus far, completing 26 of 35 preseason attempts for 255 yards and a TD for a 103.9 rating. Weeden, however, is coming off of a relatively poor performance in the team’s “dress rehersal” against the Indianapolis Colts. Other players who will likely see considerable time include veteran offensive lineman Oneil Cousins who will start at right guard, and veteran receiver David Nelson who will draw his first action since suffering a torn ACL in September of 2012. On defense, right end Billy Winn and right outside linebacker Quentin Groves will also play. Spencer Lanning and Colton Schmidt will share punting duties. Schmidt is expected to hold for all field goals as well as handle all kickoffs. The Browns were awarded Schmidt off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. He and Lanning will battle for a job as the team’s primary punter. All NFL teams are required to trim their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday. The Browns currently have 75 players.
