Running back Steven Jackson is one of the biggest names on the NFL’s free agent market this offseason, and if reports are to be believed, he is close to finding a new home. The Green Bay Packers are reportedly close to signing the 29-year-old running back to a deal. Jackson has spent his entire nine-year career with the St. Louis Rams, but voided the final year of his contract last week. While the Atlanta Falcons were thought of as a top candidate to land the Oregon State product, most experts agree the Packers will be tough to beat for his services. Green Bay general manager has always been an admirer of Jackson, and would likely be willing to give him a deal in the $12 million range (guaranteed money) over three seasons. That would be a solid deal for both sides. Jackson will be 30 in June, but he still has some gas left in the tank. He is a solid receiver out of the backfield, and at 6’2″ and 240 pounds would give the Packers the between-the-tackles runner they have lacked in recent years. The 29-year-old is the NFL’s active leader in rushing yards (10,135) and attempts (2,395), while he is tied for fifth in touchdowns (56). Jackson has also hauled in 407 passes for 3,324 yards and eight scores during his career. While nothing is official and things can change quickly in the NFL, all signs point to Jackson ending up in Green Bay.
