The Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins officially kicked off the NFL season last Sunday, August 4th with the Pro Football Hall of Fame game. This was the beginning. It’s what everyone has been waiting for. Yeah, it’s not real football but it did remind us that real football is less than a month away. Although last Sunday was good, this past Friday night was even better. No, it’s not because Tony Romo missed the Cowboys first pre-season game and was playing for the first time this year. It was because our fantasy football league, the National Fantasizing League, drafted last night.
This was our 7th annual draft and as usually the festivities were held at my place. The draft process has evolved some over the years. The first year I borrowed a projector from my work in order to display the draft board on one of the walls in my living room. We’ve had the board on one of my TV’s in previous years but this year I decided to finally make the real board and you can see the completed board here:
As usual, the draft was a lot of fun. We had 7 guys at my house and three drafting online. Maybe when we get Jeremiah back on the east coast next year, we’ll be able to get the full crew at my place. As you can see from the board above, we had our fair share of homer picks. With me reaching for Anquan Boldin in the 7th round for my 49ers and Rob grabbing 4 Cowboys including the Cowboys D/ST and Dan Bailey with his final picks of the night.
One of the more interesting moves of the night came when Chris took Colin Kaepernick and RG3 with back-to-back picks after hearing Rob talk about his need for a QB. Friends tend to become a little unfriendly when it comes to fantasy football. Rob had to “settle” for taking Tony Romo with the following pick. There were a couple reaches, most notably with Tommy taking Jermichael Finley in the 5th round when he could have probably waited until the 9th or 10th. It’s a reach, but let’s also remember that Tommy’s last couple years including grabbing Arian Foster before he exploded and grabbing Doug Martin last year.
A couple other interesting moves came with both Chris and Miles grabbing three QB’s and Jeremiah grabbing three TE’s. But what takes the cake is Jason taking three defenses. Come on Jason. You’re better than that. I think a lot of this craziness came in the end of the draft when owners didn’t really what to do with their picks. So when in doubt, stockpile picks. A couple of great late round values came in the 14th round when Johnny scooped up Josh Gordon and Chris grabbed Chris Givens when they both had 10th round grades. We’ll see who really had the best draft in the next couple months.
T-Minus 26 days until the regular season kicks off!!
