The Headline: Bengals bungle away a win against the Dolphins

The Story:

If I’m being totally honest here, this game looked like a slam dunk, bank on it win for the Bengals as they were hosting a team that is not very good, they were on a three game winning streak and this is the exact sort of game the Bengals would play well in to make everyone wonder if they’re actually good. Instead we were left more impressed by the performance of the Dolphins who, despite their lack of overall talent, looked like that feisty team we saw giving teams a fright during their December surge last year. Ryan Tannehill gave a properly measured performance going 17/26 for only 223 yards but he did not commit any silly turnovers that you expect to see out of a rookie quarterback. Their running game wasn’t great but it did just enough with Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas each getting a touchdown to help their team to this upset victory. In the end for the Bengals they just made mistakes at the worst possible times, most notably when Andy Dalton’s final pass was intercepted as they tried to get down the field for the winning touchdown.

Key Stat: Bengals: 19 rushes to 46 pass attempts

Going into the season the Bengals were hoping that their running game would continue to serve as the primary focus of their offense with BenJarvus Green-Ellis filling the role of the departed Cedric Benson being competently backed up by Bernard Scott forming a solid one-two punch. In this game the running game was a near non-factor after Scott went out with a serious injury and the Bengals fell into a 17-6 hole in the third quarter leaving Andy Dalton to try and bring them back with his arm.

Key Play: Andy Dalton intercepted by Reshard Jones late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Facing a second and 20 from their own 23 yard line with a minute and a half to go, things were looking grim at best for the Bengals and this play sealed their fate as their offense failed to deliver at the important moment. Andy Dalton dropped back to throw but his throw was too high as he tried to get it to Hawkins and it landed right in the stomach of Jones to end their hopes of winning.

Man of the Match: Ryan Tannehill

17/26, 223 yards

Tannehill was far from spectacular in this game but his performance in this has nothing but encouraging signs in it for the Dolphins rookie signal caller. While he did not go out and throw for 400 yards and 5 touchdowns, Tannehill was smart and efficient in this game with only 9 incompletions and no turnovers against what still is a very good Bengals defense.
