Nick Foles has impressed a lot of people with his preseason performance thus far. While the majority of the rookie quarterback’s opportunities have come against 2nd and 3rd string defenses, Foles will have an opportunity tonight to show Eagles fans whether there is cause for true optimism.

That’s not to say that a third week preseason start will make or break him, but with the recent injury to the fragile Michael Vick and his ribs, Foles will get an unexpected chance to start against the first unit of an NFL team. Fans are hoping that the QB continues to show the poise and patience tonight that he has exhibited in his previous outings.

I’ve said before that the Eagles putting all of their Super Bowl hopes on the back of Michael Vick is a risky proposition. It’s like building a house of cards. When the slightest breeze blows by, the whole house comes tumbling down. In two preseason starts, Vick has been injured twice and has had more tests (4) than TD passes (0). If this is an indication of what to expect this season, the Eagles will need a reliable, durable and competent backup.

Most will tell you that Foles is probably not ready for prime time in the NFL just yet. As well as he has played, there is still plenty to be learned. But Foles has already exceeded most people’s expectations. If he continues to pick things up and progress, there is a possibility that you’re looking at a starting caliber NFL QB.

Only time will tell, but I’m feeling a little better with Foles behind center than Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards and maybe even Vick at this point.Similar Posts:
