No progress in Aaron Rodgers-Packers situation ahead of camp?

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers might be celebrating an NBA championship as minority owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. However, things are going to get real for the reigning NFL MVP here soon.

The Packers are slated to open training camp next week and there’s no indication yet that Rodgers plans on reporting with the rest of his team.

As you already know, a report surfaced back in late April that Rodgers wants to be traded. Since then, he’s remained away from offseason team activities.

With Green Bay preparing for the 2021 season, it’s being noted by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport that things are essentially the same between the two sides as they were during the spring.

“What’s amazing about this situation is it’s essentially exactly the same as it was in March and April with no deal between the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers on any type of new contract,” Rapoport noted. “With his frustration still palpable at the organization, just about the lack of say he has. Essentially being treated just like any other player.”

This doesn’t seem to be a major update, but it does reflect the situation at hand between Rodgers and his Packers. No progress is essentially a step in the wrong direction.

All of this comes amid reports that Rodgers turned down a two-year extension offer from Green Bay earlier this offseason that would have tied him to the Wisconsin-based NFL team for the next five seasons. Said deal would have made Rodgers the highest-paid player in league history.

Will Aaron Rodgers report to training camp?

That’s the million dollar question right now. Obviously, Rodgers faces stiff fines if he were to stay away from training camp. Right now, that’s the least of his worries with the future Hall of Famer having earned nearly a quarter billion throughout his career.

The larger story here is whether Green Bay will suddenly cave and trade Rodgers to a team of his choosing. In the report that indicated he requested a trade back in April, the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders were listed as preferred destinations for Rodgers.

With San Francisco likely out of the mix after drafting Trey Lance No. 3 overall back in April, that would likely leave the Raiders and Broncos as potential destinations.

None of this really matters with Green Bay standing firm in its stance that Rodgers will not be traded. In the process, 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love continues to get first-team reps with the Packers’ franchise quarterback remaining away from the facility.
