I made a trip up to Latrobe, PA to Steelers training camp on Saturday afternoon. I probably didn’t choose the best of days, but it was an overall interesting experience. Many players did not participate in Saturday’s practice; that list included Le’Veon Bell, Lawrence Timmons, Brett Keisel, Jason Worilds, and Jarvis Jones. - Ben Roethlisberger and LaMarr Woodley have lost some pounds. Both look much more fit than last season. - The punting battle is a very tight race. Brian Moorman and Drew Butler were both consistently good in Saturday’s practice. I’d imagine if the race stays this close, Butler will keep his job due to his young age. - John Parker Wilson and Bruce Gradkowski looked sharp. Gradkowski connected with Emmanuel Sanders on an out route 20-30 yards deep. - Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown are both looking great. Sanders even managed to beat Ike Taylor on a go route, but Gradkowski was unable to put the ball on target. - I was very impressed with Justin Brown’s coll...

Perhaps The Greatest Ike Taylor Interview Ever

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor has given several great interviews over the course of his many years in the league. Some have had serious tones, while others are just outright funny. The interview Taylor gave a few days ago on DVE Radio is perhaps his all-time greatest one ever, at least from a funny perspective. [...] Perhaps The Greatest Ike Taylor Interview Ever is a...

Steelers Waive G Nik Embernate Injured; Sign T D’Anthony Batiste

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a roster move on Saturday as undrafted free agent guard Nik Embernate has been waived injured and free agent tackle D’Anthony Batiste has been signed to take his place on the 90 man roster. Embernate tore his ACL and MCL on Thursday and his surgery will be forthcoming. Assuming he clears [...] Steelers Waive G Nik Embernate Injured; Sign T D...

Keith Butler Thinks Stevenson Sylvester Can Be A Good Third Inside Linebacker In 2013

We have talked quite a bit about of the lack of depth the Pittsburgh Steelers have at the inside linebacker position as they head into the 2013 season. David Todd of 970 ESPN Radio asked linebackers coach Keith Butler to give his thoughts on that depth when he talked to him on Saturday. “Kion Wilson, [...] Keith Butler Thinks Stevenson Sylvester Can Be A Good Third Inside Linebacker...

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Says Team May Move Forward With A Few Contract Extensions

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long standing history of not talking contracts once the regular season gets underway as they normally like to get contract extensions taken care during training camp. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was a guest Friday morning on 970 ESPN Radio and he was asked about extensions possibly being on the [...] Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Says Team May...

Stephens-Howling right at home with Steelers

At 5-foot-7, LaRod Stephens-Howling doesn't feel out of place during some of the Pittsburgh Steelers' more size-oriented training camp drills. The running back has held his own during short-yardage and goal-line exercises and has looked right at home in ''backs-on-backers'' protection drills. It has helped that playing for the Steelers has made Stephens...

Pittsburgh Steelers Will Wear Ugly Bumblebee Throwback Uniforms in 2013

Old-school NFL uniforms tend to receive good reviews from fans and media outlets alike, but that wasn’t the case when the Pittsburgh Steelers unveiled their 1934 throwback bumblebee uniforms to commemorate the franchise’s 80th anniversary against the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens last season. The Steelers are in trouble if Cortez Allen doesn’t recover quickly

Cortez Allen had surgery on his right knee Friday morning; he’s expected to miss a couple of weeks. Head coach Mike Tomlin labeled the surgery as “minor.” With Allen out, the Steelers will be in trouble if he’s not ready to go by the time the regular season rolls around. It was reported that Curtis Brown was taking snaps as the No.2 corner at the Friday night practice. And...

Before And After – LaMarr Woodley’s Pass Rushing As It Relates To 2011 Injury

Much has been made of the fact that Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley has only generated four sacks over the past season and a half since he blew out a hamstring running down Tom Brady midway through the team’s Week 8 victory over the New England Patriots in 2011. With that in mind, I [...] Before And After – LaMarr Woodley’s Pass Rushing As It Relates To...

Veteran Moorman out to win Steelers' punter job

Perhaps if it was as easy to make a living in track and field as it is in professional football, Brian Moorman wouldn't be spending these later-summer weeks in a Rooney Hall dorm room at St. Vincent College. After all, Moorman was merely an All-America selection for NCAA Division II for football. In track and field, he's a Hall of Famer. ''I still love to run,&...

Subtraction Of Mendenhall Statistically A Good Thing For Steelers Pass Protection

Matthew Marczi Earlier this week, we have devoted two articles to the pass blocking prowess of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ running backs last season, and how it will be a chore for Le’Veon Bell to get up to speed with the rest of the group. However, it is fair to note that the 2012 season was [...] Subtraction Of Mendenhall Statistically A Good Thing For Steelers Pass Protection...

Steelers and Bears essentially trade tight ends; Spaeth has minor surgery

Earlier this off-season the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to let tight-end Leonard Pope leave in free agency. Pope joined the Steelers as a free agent last off-season, but he was surpassed on the depth chart by seventh round pick David Paulson. To add some veteran depth at tight-end the Steelers brought back Matt Spaeth. Spaeth was the team’s third round pick in the 2007 draft, but...

NFL Pro Bowl 2.0: Will It Work?

Growing up in Hawaii I was fortunate enough to have yearly tickets to the NFL  Pro Bowl. From 1991 (I was 5 years old) until 2012 (just before I moved to Arizona), I missed a total of three Pro Bowl games. Two of those were due to illness, while the other saw me on a business trip. Needless to say, the Pro Bowl has been the one way for Hawaii’s NFL fans to see their favorite players...

As We Near The Preseason, Time To Tone Down The Steelers Physical Practices

By Matthew Marczi The 2013 edition of training camp, and in particular the padded practice portion of the proceedings, really opened up with a bang. Or rather, a series of bangs, spread out throughout the past week or so. More bangs than have been a part of a Pittsburgh Steelers training camp since Chuck Noll [...] As We Near The Preseason, Time To Tone Down The Steelers Physical...
