The Oakland Raiders have cut offensive guard Mike Brisiel. The writing was on the wall for Brisiel after two bad years in Oakland. Plagued by injuries and a switch from a zone blocking scheme to a power blocking scheme, Brisiel never quite found his way in Oakland. Signed during McKenzie’s first off season with the team, Brisiel was given the longest contract of any free agent signed by the Raiders that year and was seen as a big upgrade at the time. The Raiders have released G Mike Brisiel. — OAKLAND RAIDERS (@RAIDERS) April 1, 2014 Now, however, as the Raiders have spent much of the offseason bringing in new lineman to help rebuild one of the worst offensive line units in the NFL, Brisiel did not have a strong chance of starting. While he would have made for good depth, the Raiders clearly did not want to pay him his contract to play that role. Brisiel was scheduled to have a cap hit of over $5 million this upcoming season but still carries a dead money hit of almost $4 million per overthecap.com Therefore, the Raiders will only save a little over $1 million by cutting him this year. While the savings will be nice, it is doubtful that was the entire reason for his being cut. The Raiders likely did not see him playing a role with the team going forward and wanted to not only clear some cap space, but also clear some roster space and give Brisiel the chance to catch on with another team. But there is also the possibility that Brisiel simply cannot play this year because of injuries. It had been noted recently that he may consider retirement. Perhaps the Raiders were simply helping him down that path.
