After the Oakland Raiders victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, they will try to make it two in a row against AFC West rival Denver Broncos. That means preparing for soon to be Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

“He’s Peyton Manning; he’s a Hall of Fame quarterback,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “There’s no way that we’re going to in any way say that he’s not the quarterback that he’s been. I’ve watched the tape. He’s still an outstanding quarterback. He’s operating that offense and I don’t really see much of a drop off from where he’s been before.”

Despite Allen's praise, Manning has some vulnerabilities coming off neck surgery that cost him all of 2011. The 15 year veteran threw three interceptions in the first quarter against the Atlanta Falcons and looks to have lost some velocity on his passes. However, he is still one of the greatest at identifying defenses and finding open receivers. Oakland will also have to deal with the high altitude and fast paced no huddle offense.

“That’s one of the things that they do with the no-huddle is try not to let you substitute,” Allen said. “We’re going to do the best we can to keep up with that pace. Our deal is we’ve got to do a great job communicating and we’ve got to be patient.”

The key to slowing down all great quarterbacks is the pass rush. Through three games the Raiders have only mustered four sacks. The front four will have to do a better job of getting pressure to keep Manning hurried and uncomfortable. With the injuries to starting cornerbacks Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer, the pass rush becomes even more important. Last week the Raiders defense gave up 384 yards and four touchdowns to Ben Roethlisberger.

“When they’ve got six or seven protectors versus four rushers it’s hard to get a lot pressure on the quarterback,” Allen said. “There were a few times where we had a little something going in the game last week and Roethlisberger does a great job of maneuvering in the pocket. Obviously, we’ve got to try to do some things to get a little more pressure on the quarterback because as we go throughout the season we’re going to need that.”

Allen was the defensive coordinator for the Broncos last season so he is familiar with their personnel. He can use that knowledge to build a game plan for the defense and identify weaknesses for the offense.
