For the second straight preseason it looks like Matt Flynn can’t lock down a quarterback job that was completely gift-wrapped for him. Last year the Seattle Seahawks did all they could to let Flynn win their starting gig, but he lost out to rookie Russell Wilson. This year the Oakland Raiders dubbed him the starter, but he has been outplayed by backup Terrelle Pryor so far. On Saturday, Raiders head coach Dennis Allen announced that he was re-opening the team’s quarterback competition. Pryor completed 7-of-9 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown during Oakland’s third preseason game on Friday night. He also added 37 yards and a second touchdown on the ground and generally chewed up the Chicago Bears second-string defense. So far in the preseason, Pryor has completed 14-of-24 passes (58.3 percent) for 190 yards (7.92 yards per attempt), one touchdown and an interception. He’s also rushed for 83 yards on 11 scrambles. His mechanics and accuracy aren’t good, but his ability to escape the pocket gives the team a dimension it is sorely lacking when Flynn is under center. Given how awful Oakland’s offensive line is, Flynn will likely be a sitting duck behind it. He has been sacked a ridiculous seven times on just 34 preseason drop-backs. That’s a truly remarkable statistic. On Friday night Flynn completed 3-of-6 passes for just 19 yards and threw two interceptions. He was sacked once and generally looked confused and uncomfortable with the first team. I sincerely doubt Pryor will unseat Flynn by Week 1. After all, there are some huge holes in his game. The guy just isn’t a natural passer. Maybe he can develop in time, but as stated, his mechanics and accuracy are sorely lacking. At best, Pryor could start a few weeks into the season if Flynn is truly horrible, which isn’t that hard to imaging happening. Whatever happens, it’s pretty crazy to think that Flynn may have played him out of starting jobs in back-to-back seasons.
