The Oakland Raiders liked wide receiver Rod Streater before the 2012 NFL Draft, but a combination of several needs and just five picks, did not allow them to select him. Things worked out for the Raiders when Streater signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Temple and has worked his way up to first team reps.

“I think he’s earned the right to get the reps and he’s done a nice job,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “He’s a young guy, he’s continuing to improve, but he’s obviously caught our eye enough that he’s earned the right to get a couple first team reps.”

The hamstring injury to Denarius Moore during the first day of this week's mandatory mini-camp allowed Streater to step in and take over on the first team offense. Streater had been impressive during organized team activities and rookie mini-camp with highlight catches and explosive speed.

“It’s a little bit of both,” Allen said. “He’s caught the ball extremely well. He’s run very good routes. He knows how to get open. He’s been an explosive receiver and again, he’s still a young guy, so he’s still learning, he’s still making those young rookie mistakes, but from an athletic standpoint, from a skill set standpoint, he’s impressed.”

At Temple, Streater flashed skills that would translate to the NFL, but a shaky quarterback situation held him back from his full potential. The 6-4, 195 pound receiver finished his college career with 49 receptions for 882 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games started.

With Streater making such an impression, the Raiders will be left with a tough decision when putting together the 53 man roster, after training camp, in late July. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore, and Jacoby Ford are locks to make the team. Another rookie Juron Criner, who was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Raiders, has also been impressive and looks like he will make the final roster. That would leave one or two spots for Streater, Louis Murphy, and Eddie McGee.
