Steve Wisniewski, the former Oakland Raiders great and eight time pro-bowler tendered his official resignation last week as assistant offensive line coach.

It turns out the Raiders players knew it was coming weeks ago thanks to a text message from "The Wiz."  The Raiders announced that Wisniewski's position won't be filled this season and new offensive line coach Frank Pollack will assume Wisniewski's duties.

The team also announced that Wisniewski will remain with the team as an "ambassador," though that role has been left undefined.  Though Wisniewski had limited coaching experience; one year as the strength and conditioning coach at Stanford; before being picked up by the Raiders organization, the team will likely miss his experience from his own time in the trenches.

The real surprise here might have been that Wisniewski was still employed at all by the Raiders following owner Al Davis' death last year and the subsequent coaching staff housecleaning undertaken by his son Mark Davis, the new "Managing General Partner."  Since Wisniewski was not a zone blocking lineman when he played and the Raiders have returned to that scheme, it seems likely he was just kept on staff for name recognition.

To be fair to Wisniewski, maybe he did just want more time with his family as the demands on any NFL coach are enormous.  In any case, The Wiz shouldn't have any problems finding another job should he put himself back on the market.
