For the first time this decade, Osi Umenyiora will test his worth on the open market as he's unlikely to return to the Giants. Campaigning for such an event, Umenyiora claimed Friday that whichever team he lands with -- contender or not -- will be getting the next Defensive Player of the Year. "It wouldn't have to be a playoff team," Umenyiora said, via NFL.com. "It could be anybody pretty much anybody who would need me to help them win, and anybody who I think is going to put me in a situation to win Defensive Player of the Year, which is what I'm going to do this year." The 31-year-old defensive end reportedly won't have his contract re-upped by the Giants, the only club he's known in his professional career. Though Umenyiora seems open to a return to Big Blue, he's keeping his options wide open. "My phone is on. I'm not turning my phone off. I'm open to pretty much every situation right now," Umenyiora said. "Wherever puts me in the best situation to really go out there and showcase my skills and help them win, I think that's where I want to go." A two-time All-Pro, Umenyiora will join a free agent class headlined by veteran pass rushers (Dwight Freeney, John Abraham) and young studs (Paul Kruger, Cliff Avril). He may not be signed in the initial flurry, but Umenyiora should have no issues landing on his feet. Whether he'll live up to this promise, though, is an entirely different story.
