When Lovie Smith took over as head coach of the Chicago Bears he was given one task to complete by Bears President Mike McCaskey.Beat the Packers. Why? The Packers had defeated the Bears 20 of the previous 23 meetings before Smith took over and had generally reigned supreme over the NFC Central during that time.Smith changed that. From his rookie campaign in 2004 to 2008 Smith guided the Bears to a 7-3 record over the Packers. During that time he took the Bears to a NFC championship and a Super Bowl appearance. His teams also won two division title during that time. Chicago was back. Fighting every season for the division crown with Green Bay and holding their own.Unfortunately for Smith things have undeniably changed again. The Bears have made the playoffs just once in the last five years and are on the ropes again after Sunday's loss to the Packers. The same Packers he was hired to beat. But now has lost eight of his last nine games to. Including the NFC Championship game at Soldiers Field in 2011 when the Bears had won the division title and home field advantage. There are varying reasons for this. Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson have lifted the Packers from the mess Mike Sherman had made. And to be fair Smith has never had a quarterback like Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers. But the Bears front office did pony up to get Jay Cutler for Lovie. One would imagine in doing so they expected more than what they have received since Cutler arrived three years ago.Smith's final year of his contract is next season and talks of an extension have been tabled as his team has lost four of it's last five. Further muddying the issue for Lovie is he now works for first year general manager Phil Emery. There are no ties between this general manager and coach. So it's kind of obvious isn't it? The number one thing we learned about the Bears and Packers today?Lovie isn't doing what he was hired to do anymore. Lovie's in trouble.
