Found April 26, 2013 on Packer Fans United:
Let's first admit: I got it wrong. My guess, as I posted in pre-draft entries here, was that the Green Bay Packers would trade down out of the the number 26 spot in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft to acquire additional picks. That's typically GM Ted Thompson's way of doing things. My updated guess is that, somehow, he's still going to wind up with more than the eight picks with which he started.(Courtesy UCLA)But that's not the point here. Thompson and the Packers stuck with their first round pick because there was someone on the board that they had targeted and, in fact, didn't think would still be available, according to Thompson. That player was indeed available when the Pack went on the clock. And they got him: UCLA DE Datone Jones. Welcome to the Packers, Mr. Jones. Glad to have you in the Green 'n' Gold, and wearing jersey number 95.As the Packers' number finally came up in round one, ESPN displayed Mel Kiper Jr.s' 10 best picks st...

Datone Jones Will Bring Toughness, Pass Rush to Green Bay Packers

The First Round of the 2013 NFL Draft had plenty of surprises and headline stories, one pick that didn’t generate much buzz though was the Green Bay Packers selection of UCLA defensive end Datone Jones. Yet, despite the lack of hype surrounding the pick, general manager Ted Thompson hit a home run with the 26th pick, getting a player that will add to an already potent pass rush...

Jones seems a perfect fit for Packers scheme

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Datone Jones was the right pick for the Green Bay Packers in the first round. Jones, a 285-pound defensive lineman out of UCLA, fits exactly what the Packers are looking to do under coordinator Dom Capers. Jones came from a very similar college system and played every spot along the defensive line. Though the NFL game will clearly be a big step up in competition...

In Every Way, Jones Rises Above D-Linemen

From character to athleticism to versatility, UCLA's Datone Jones was the obvious choice among an attractive group of defensive linemen available at the end of the first round. If he plays with the same "maniacal effort" Jones recalled from Reggie White, the Packers might have a star.

Green Bay Packers draft reactions: Day One

The Green Bay Packers generally remain dormant when it comes to free agency in the NFL so the draft takes a whole new level of importance.  Last year the Packers went defense-heavy in the draft as it was sorely needed and this draft is off to the same start as last years. The Packers, with the 26th pick of the draft took Datone Jones, a defensive end out of UCLA. Jones has a great...

Fourth-Round Prospects to Remember

No wonder Ted Thompson was content to trade back on Friday. There is plenty of talent still on the board, including an abundance of linebackers. Here's a good guess at the strengths and weaknesses of the draft board heading into Saturday.

What's in store for the Packers, NFL Draft Rounds 4-7?

Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson started the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday night with eight draft picks. By the end of the second day of the draft (rounds 2 and 3), Trader Ted had accumulated 12 picks total at his command...10 of them for use today as the Draft winds up with rounds 4 through 7.To briefly recap, Thompson and the Packers stayed put at number 26 in the 1st round and got...

Packers were right to take care of Rodgers early

GREEN BAY, Wis. Ted Thompson and the entire Green Bay Packers' front office deserve a lot of credit for taking care of Aaron Rodgers two years before the team had to. This was not a Joe Flacco situation for the Packers and their star quarterback. Green Bay wasn't in danger of potentially losing Rodgers to another team had this new deal not been agreed upon now. Under no...

Lacy’s Fall is Packers’ Gain

No running back during Ted Thompson’s tenure in Green Bay has been selected higher than Alabama’s Eddie Lacy. But Lacy’s fall in the draft is the big story. Read what Thompson, the Packers’ director of college scouting and a former NFL general manager said about Lacy on Friday night.

What will the Green Bay Packers do in the 2013 NFL Draft?

Free agency came and went without much activity for the Green Bay Packers. This shouldn’t come as much a surprise to die-hard cheese heads because General Manager Ted Thompson and the Packers have always banked their future on the NFL Draft and the ensuing development of young talent. Green Bay snatched up it’s best two players in QB Aaron Rodgers (’05 draft) and LB Clay Matthews...
