Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said his vision was "bouncing around" after he was poked in the right eye by Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins in the game Sunday against the Saints, and he was not sure if he could even hand the ball off cleanly with a first and goal on the Saints' one-yard line, Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
Rodgers on Tuesday talked about getting hit in the eye and a variety of other topics on his weekly radio show on WAUK-AM (540) with reporter Jason Wilde.
"We had a roll out on the play called," Rodgers said. "They brought some empty pressure. Didnt have anybody (open). . . . Looking to hit Donald (Driver). But they kind of passed it off pretty good, the route concept we had. As I came out I kind of wanted to extend to the play a little bit and give my guys a chance to work. Just gave (Saints safety) Malcolm (Jenkins) a little stutter step, which allowed me to get outside of him. He grabbed inside my facemask and gave me like a two-fingered punch to my right eye. I actually lost vision for a second right there."
Rodgers said he was trying to decide in the moment if the officials had made a facemask call on Jenkins, which would allow him a free play into the end zone.
"Intelligence kind of won over at that point and I decided to just throw a higher percentage pass to Donald right there on the corner that was incomplete. At that point I was wondering if my eye was scratched badly."
Rodgers said the poke on Sunday left him with a bloody nose, a scratched face and a right eye that gave him a depth perception problem.
"I just couldnt see very well," Rodgers said. "Everything was just kind of bouncing around a little bit. . . . When I had them both opened, the right eye obviously had some trauma to it. I was having a hard time trying to get that depth perception. I went down on one knee knowing it would give Graham a little of time to warm up, knowing we were inside the five there with probably an automatic first down."
