New UCLA head coach Jim L. Mora was hoping to have his staff complete the beginning of this week. Clearly those plans have hit a bump in the road. Thursday revealed more uncertainty. John Pagano has been named defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner announced Thursday. Pagano takes over for Greg Manusky, who was fired after one season. Pagano, who's been on the Chargers staff the last 10 seasons and held the position of linebackers coach since 2005, was expected to be named UCLA's next defensive coordinator earlier this week. It was rumored to be all but a done deal with Pagano joining the staff in the beginning of the week before the dead period began on Wednesday. It would have been a reunion for Pagano and Mora who worked together with the Saints in 1996 and 1997. Pagano was a defensive assistant, while Mora served as defensive backs coach on his father's staff. Pagano also worked under the elder Mora with the Colts. Despite his ties to the Mora's, Pagano decided staying in San Diego was best for him. "It was a nice honor to have Coach (Jim) Mora be able to want me for that job. It wasn't a factor of taking this job or that job," said Pagano. "But like I said my family loves it here in San Diego. I love it here, I love this organization, I've been a part of this organization for a long time and I'm really excited about the opportunity I have ahead of me." The thought of Pagano moving north to Westwood played into the decision for Turner and the Chargers. "I think anytime you're in a process of making a decision, a lot of things go into it. Certainly we considered everything that was involved," said Turner. "I just think right now, for where our team is he's the right fit." Pagano was a finalist to be the Chargers defensive coordinator last year before Manusky was hired. After the team finished last in the league in third down defense, Turner, who to the surprise of most in the football world was issued a new lease on life earlier this week by Chargers' president Dean Spanos, decided it was time for change. Chargers players were in favor of Pagano being named their new coordinator. For UCLA, the search is back on. Mora, who's a defensive coach, is expected to have a prominent role in coordinating the defense, along with whoever the new coordinator will be. Mora is scheduled to meet with the team for the first time on Monday and currently has four vacancies on his staff, including offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coach. Former Arizona State offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone is expected to take the same position with UCLA although it has not been officially announced. Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Jeff Ulbrich is expected to be named special teams coach. Ulbrich has spent the last two seasons as a special teams assistant with the Seattle Seahawks.
