Most everyone I know in this world works hard for their money. They show up every day to the office or wherever and give it their best shot. As of today, a lot of folks will start to rethink this theory.

This afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles came to terms on a new contract with wide receiver DeSean Jackson to the tune of 5 years and $48.5 million. In that is $15 million guaranteed and built in incentives worth another $4.5 million.

This begs the question; what happened to the old adage of “Work hard for your money?” It was quite evident during the 2011 NFL season that Jackson completely quit on his fellow teammates in what turned out to be a disastrous campaign for the Eagles. Not that any team should ever again be referred to as the “Dream Team” (especially after 1992), but the Eagles were built to win the Super Bowl this year. Then DeSean Jackson happened. Well, to be fair, he wasn’t the only reason, just a big part of it.

Essentially the Eagles are rewarding Jackson for quitting on them. How do you justify guaranteeing $15 million to someone that obviously let you down? That’s almost as bad as Vanessa Bryant taking Kobe back after he bought her a $7 million ring. And we all know how that ultimately turned out.

Maybe the Eagles like the way that Jackson does front flips into the end zone. That can be entertaining, right? Hell, it’s a lot more entertaining than watching Jackson sulking on the sidelines. It’s definitely not entertaining watching him jog an incorrect route.

Maybe I was just born into old school thinking; you know, the thinking that if you don’t come to work and bust your tail, you don’t make what you deserve. On the weekends when I bartend, if I’m not on the top of my game, I don’t walk home with cash in my pocket.

This almost begs the question of what was the purpose of last year’s lockout. Was it so pretentious athletes could cry and pout their way to a big payday? If only the real world were that simple. Let’s hope the Eagles know what they are doing. Otherwise, they will be more hated than James Dolan in New York.
