Despite Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers have to be pleased with how well running back Jonathan Stewart has performed since returning from a head injury suffered against the New Orleans Saints in Week 9. Since joining the team in 2008, Stewart has mostly been used as a backup to DeAngelo Williams—who was placed on injured reserve a few weeks ago with a foot injury. Stewart posted his first game of the season with 100+ rushing yards against the Falcons—finishing the day with 133 yards on 18 carries. Over his last three games, Stewart has rushed for 323 yards after averaging just 26 rushing yards per game the first eight games of the season. With DeAngelo Williams’ future in Carolina up in the air, there’s a chance Stewart may take over the starting job at running back for the Panthers in 2011.
