  Despite a handful of special teams mistakes, the Panthers were in position to pick up their first road victory of the season today, trailing the Chicago Bears 24-23 early in the fourth quarter. The Panthers pulled within a point on a 38-yard Olindo Mare field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. Trailing 24-20, the Panthers mounted an impressive drive, doing the bulk of their work on the ground, and moved deep into Chicago territory only to come away without a score. The Panthers appeared to score on a 22-yard pass from Cam Newton to tight end Jeremy Shockey but the touchdown was nullified when Shockey was flagged for offensive pass interference. Carolina moved back to the Chicago 16 but Olindo Mare's 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked by former Panther Julius Peppers, who creased the middle of the Panthers' line and got a hand up to deflect the kick.
