Patrick Mahomes thought Bears, not Chiefs, would draft him in 2017

Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes was told a different team would be drafting him in 2017.

As shared by Michael Allardyce of NBC Sports Chicago, Patrick Mahomes Sr. said during a Monday appearance on Chicago sports radio station 670 The Score that the Chicago Bears informed his son they'd be selecting him and not Mitchell Trubisky in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes Sr. added the 27-year-old "definitely wanted" to be with the Bears at that time.

"They told him they were going to draft him, so we thought he was going to be the third pick overall and go to Chicago," Mahomes Sr. explained during the "Parkins & Spiegel" program. "He had a great meeting when he was there and liked all the guys that were doing stuff there. He thought he was going to be a Bear."

Mahomes Sr. noted that Mahomes was left "hurt" when the Bears traded up to acquire Trubisky with the second-overall pick. The Chiefs later moved up to get Mahomes with selection No. 10 that spring, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

The Bears gave up on Trubisky after four seasons, and he's since spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers. Mahomes, meanwhile, was able to sit behind Alex Smith on the Kansas City depth chart and already has a regular-season Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award, a Super Bowl MVP, one championship, and two Super Bowl appearances with a third on the way among his Hall-of-Fame-worthy accomplishments.

Fans can only guess what Mahomes would or wouldn't be if he had spent the early days of his NFL career with a head coach other than offensive guru Andy Reid. That likely won't stop Bears fans from dreaming about what could have been, especially considering Chicago may start over with a new rookie quarterback via this year's draft.
