TEAMS: New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins
The Patriots offense received a little shake-up, with Matt Light being a surprise inactive. That meant Logan Mankins would start at left tackle, which is interesting. But, first… the defense.
The Patriots came out in their regular 4-3 look, even with Andre Carter being out. Shaun Ellis was the starting defensive end in Carter’s place, and he started fast with a sack. But the defense allowed a 39-yard pass play by QB Matt Moore to WR Brian Hartline, who beat CB Devin McCourty on a double move.
The Dolphins made it 3-0 on a 48-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter with 10:59 left in the first quarter.
As for the offense, it was like we thought. Mankins was at left tackle, Donald Thomas was a guard, and Dan Connolly was at center. When Nate Solder moved out to the third TE spot, Marcus Cannon came in at tackle. The Patriots got one first down on a 16-yarder to Wes Welker. But an overload on the left side led to a sack of Tom Brady and a punt.

Patriots release injury report: LT Matt Light and S Patrick Chung are surprisingly out
There was an interesting injury situation that seemed to crop up this morning, as Patriots LT Matt Light worked out under the watchful eye of the training staff. Dr. Tom Gill was out there, so was strength coach Harold Nash, and others. Maybe Light’s gimpy ankle from the Chiefs game flared up.
So, how did it all come out?

The tackles, suddenly, are in focus. Matt Light is surprisingly out, and rookies Nate Solder and Logan Mankins are going to be the bookends. Yes, really. Mankins warmed up at his old college position. As for Solder, it was against the Dolphins that Solder made his debut.

Patriots fill Andre Carter’s spot by promoting Alex Silvestro… and other moves
The Patriots have had an open roster spot since they placed DE Andre Carter on Injured Reserve. Yet they waited all week to actually put somebody in it.
They did today, but not in the expected move. They didn’t promote Markell Carter from the practice squad, even if he’s been earning big money on the practice squad.
Instead, they called up DE Alex Silvestro, a 6-foot-3, 267...
Video of the day: The Herald’s Patriots reporters break down Dolphins week
It was a short week of preparation, a quick turnaround for the Patriots to get ready for the Dolphins. Now, their second matchup is almost here. Still, it was a busy few days, including surgery for DE Andre Carter and players trying to get over winning the AFC East. In the meantime, colleague Karen Guregian and I broke down the week. Huge Patriots comeback clinches bye
This may have been the best possible type of game for the Patriots to play heading into the postseason. Down 17-0 at halftime with absolutely nothing working, the Patriots responded with 27 unanswered points by dominating both sides of the ball. New England won 27-24 despite missing both starting tackles. Guard Logan Mankins started at left tackle,…
