As expected, Bill Belichick didn’t provide an update on the condition of linebacker Jerod Mayo a day after the Patriots 31-19 win over the Raiders. But if Mayo is out for a month with a sprained MCL, Belichick clearly has confidence that Gary Guyton can step in and help fill the void. “Certainly I think Gary has had a big role in our defense over the last three years and I’m sure he’ll continue to,” Belichick said. “He’s a key guy for us and he’s done a good job.” Belichick said the team regularly prepares for such situations, with Guyton and others assuming defensive play-calling duties in practice and the preseason. While Mayo will not be easy to replace, Belichick expects Guyton to be able to handle the inside linebacker position. “Gary and Jerod came in together,” Belichick said. “They’re very close personally. They play next to each other and have great communication. Both guys kind of can do what the other one does and they change assignments and positions regularly on the defense
