The Patriots have had an open roster spot since they placed DE Andre Carter on Injured Reserve. Yet they waited all week to actually put somebody in it.
They did today, but not in the expected move. They didn’t promote Markell Carter from the practice squad, even if he’s been earning big money on the practice squad.
Instead, they called up DE Alex Silvestro, a 6-foot-3, 267-pound former Rutgers standout who was undrafted. He had 4.5 sacks as a senior, then landed on the practice squad all season.
Why not Markell Carter? Maybe the Patriots are fearful of promoting him, then cutting him and seeing another team snag him on waivers.
Meanwhile, the Patriots promoted safety Sterling Moore from the practice, cutting newly signed Vincent Fuller in the process. My view on Fuller is that he had a broken arm in Detroit, and the Patriots thought it was healed. It wasn’t. Perhaps we see him later on.
