The Patriots defense will almost certainly be without their best defender next week against the Jets… and for several weeks after that.
Multiple sources say Mayo suffered a sprained MCL in the Patriots 31-19 win over the Raiders, sidelining him for up to six weeks. Mayo missed three games for a similar ailment in 2009, but he may have come back too soon them.
Coach Bill Belichick was noncommital when discussing the ailment.
“We’ll look at it tomorrow,” Belichick said, “see where he’s at going into this week.”
Mayo was the league’s leading tackler last season, and his absence stings. Still, the team did stand strong in the second half today. But with the Jets coming next week, Gary Guyton will have to play big.
