Week after week, the New England Patriots struggled to play a complete football game on three phases of the game, especially in the team’s embarrassing loss against the Buffalo Bills last week.

Sunday against the Oakland Raiders was a different story.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots traveled to Oakland with a 2-1 record and a very inconsistent defense.

Entering Sunday’s matchup, the Patriots’ obvious top priority was to contain the NFL’s leading rusher in Darren McFadden—they did a phenomenal job in doing so.

New England’s run defense held McFadden to only 74 yards on the ground and 48 receiving yards while preventing him from scoring a single touchdown.

Belichick did what he has done so well over the past decade: take the opposing team’s best player out of the game. McFadden was a non-factor.

With McFadden struggling, the Patriots forced Jason Campbell to beat them, and after all, Campbell ending up beating himself. The 29-year-old out of Auburn did throw for 344 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted two times, one of those by New England defensive tackle Vince Wilfork.

As Campbell threw two costly turnovers, the Patriots were able to capitalize on Oakland’s costly mistakes.

Tom Brady may have been unstoppable over the course of the NFL’s first three weeks, but he did not put up the same huge numbers that we’re all used to seeing. Brady completed 16 of his 30 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Brady wasn’t amazing, but he was efficient.

With Brady not carrying the team’s offense, New England’s running backs stepped up in a big way.

Running back Danny Woodhead limped off the field in the second quarter with a left ankle injury and did not return, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Stevan Ridley took their games to a whole new level, especially Ridley.

The rookie out of LSU ran for a career-high 97 yards on only 10 carries while scoring once.

As the Patriots played a complete football game and finished the fourth quarter strong, the team did suffer a major loss Sunday afternoon. New England’s middle linebacker and defensive signal caller, Jerod Mayo, was carted off of the field with a reported MCL sprain and could be out a long time.

New England will now enter Week 5 with a solid 3-1 record going up against the New York Jets in both teams’ biggest game of the season to date.

The Patriots had a lot of concern regarding their defense entering Sunday’s game, but most of those concerns were addressed with an impressive showing against Oakland.

Bill Belichick Reflects on 'Great Experience' Interviewing With Al Davis for Raiders Coaching Job

FOXBORO, Mass. -- While weighing the events of the last decade, it's borderline comical to think of Bill Belichick in charge of the Oakland Raiders. Belichick has run one of the tightest ships in all of sports, while the Raiders struggled mightily from 2003-09, bungling their personnel moves and failing badly on the field. Yet the marriage nearly happened. Belichick interviewed...

Vince Wilfork, the man with “vacuum cleaner” hands, says Bill Belichick

When it comes to interceptions, you can’t stop Vince Wilfork, you can only hope to contain him. Yes, the big fella snagged another one earlier today against the Raiders. That’s two picks on the season for the defensive lineman. After his amazing interception and return against the Chargers Week 2, Wilfork added to the collection, picking off a Jason Campbell pass early in the...

Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Reveals He Interviewed For Raiders' Job In 1998

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick knows a lot about the Raiders he said, because he interviewed for the head coaching job there with team owner Al Davis according to Paul Kenyon of the Providence Journal. “It was good. It was good experience for me. I went out there after the ’98 season,” he related. “We had a good couple days of conversation. “It was good because we...

Bill Belichick Conference Call Transcript - 10/4/2011

Read what Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had to say during his conference call to the New England media on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.

Distance runner;McFadden leads No. 1 rushing offense

The Patriots faced the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense last week in Buffalo. They'll do the same Sunday in Oakland. The Raiders, bolstered by Darren McFadden's career-high performance against the Jets, moved into the top spot this week and McFadden, fresh off his 171-yard effort, definitely has the attention of the Patriots' defense. "He's a tough back,"...

How much interest did the Pats have in Plaxico Burress? We’ll let Bill Belichick fill in some details

Plaxico Burress was an intriguing proposition for some teams, following his release from prison earlier this year. Prior to his serving time for having a gun, and using it to shoot himself in the leg, Burress was one of the best receivers in the game. As most will painfully recall, he caught the game-winning touchdown for the New York Giants in the 2007-08 Super Bowl that killed...

Why Patriots DL coach Pepper Johnson is “more than” pleased (really) with his pass-rush…

The statistics are not pretty. The Patriots have just six sacks, which is tied for 25th in the league. Their pass defense has struggled, and it doesn’t seem like the front four has helped much. Once again against the Raiders, there were no sacks and just three quarterback hits. Yet, as I wrote last week, there was a thought among the pass-rushers that they are doing pretty well...

The Dirtiest Word in the NFL Will Surprise You

DATELINE: HUMOR! When did “finesse” become a dirty word in the NFL? One of the Oakland Raider players referred to the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick as a “finesse team.” This apparently did not sit well with the masculine pride of the lion-roaring, raw-meat eating Patriots. We always thought that finesse was a good quality to have. How wrong we are again...

Bill Belichick reflects on his interview with Al Davis

As New England coach Bill Belihcick prepares to lead his team on the field in Oakland on Sunday, he’s reflecting on the time he interviewed to become the Raiders’ head coach. Belichick had just finished his second season as the Jets’ assistant head coach under Bill Parcells, and Raiders owner Al Davis had just fired…

The Raiders Living up to their Name

What is one word describing the Oakland Raiders for many people?  Surprising is the word for this rag-tag team. They have started out playing some great football, becoming 2-2, losing to a red-hot Buffalo Bills team by 3, and a lopsided loss to the New England Patriots, which is a team hard to beat with young players. Darren McFadden has come out of his shell, and as of now...

Patriots Considered Signing Plaxico Burress

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked by the media on Tuesday if he considered bringing in Plaxico Burress before he settled for Chad Ochocinco. ”We did look at him in the offseason just because of his general availability as we normally do – look at all the players that are not connected with [...]

Random picture of the day: How many Raiders did it take to bring down Vince Wilfork?

For the second game this season, Patriots DT Vince Wilfork recorded a crowd-pleasing interception. This time, he picked off Raiders QB Jason Campbell in the 31-19 victory yesterday, rumbled 19 yards, then needing a whole slew of Oakland players to corral him. As coach Bill Belichick joked, “He’s a hard guy to bring down. Got to gang-tackle.” I think Belichick was joking. Check...

Jeff Zrebiec's scouting report: Ravens vs. Jets

RAVENS RUN OFFENSE VS. JETS RUN DEFENSE: The Jets have spent the days leading up to the game answering questions about what has happened to their run defense. Unable to set the edge and deal with the Oakland Raiders’ speed last week, they were gashed for 234 yards on the ground, an average of 7.3 yards per carry by Darren McFadden and company. The Jets currently rank 31st in the...

The Patriots and the Raiders kick it off at O.co Coliseum… what’s happening? (7-3 Patriots)

The Patriots and the Raiders have kicked off at the Black Hole, an amped atmosphere for sure. There are a few things to get to, besides the classy touch by the Raiders having a moment of silence for Myra Kraft. Here’s what’s up: The Patriots came out in their base 4-3 look, but DT Vince Wilfork was at end. That’s a way to keep them from attacking the edges, as Darren McFadden...
