Capping off a wacky Week 3 of NFL action was perhaps the wackiest game of all between the Patriots and Ravens. Though largely entertaining, the primetime affair was marred by — what else — sloppy officiating, the maddening norm of the young season.

The game culminated in a controversial Baltimore win, when kicker Justin Tucker kicked a field goal as time expired, barely squeezing the ball inside the uprights. On first glance, the kick appeared to have veered outside, hooking over the very top. The situation was bang-bang for the overwhelmed replacement referees, though they did make the right call, and the play was not reviewable.

Legitimately shocked and equally disappointed, Patriots coach Bill Belichick argued the kick was no good, even going so far as chasing down and grabbing an official when the game was over.

Belichick’s actions, though a bit shocking, were not terribly surprising, as emotions and physicality were high the whole night. If you tuned in, it became obvious things were going to boil over sooner than later and that the refs would be at the center of discussion.

And it didn’t take long, thanks to Pats linebacker Brandon Spikes, who in a brief Twitterant unloaded on the “zebras.”

Can someone please tell these ******* zebras foot locker called and they’re needed Back at work !!!! #BreakingPoint

About an hour later, Spikes backtracked. Or tried to, at least.

Ref ?!?! I never said anything about the “Refs” y’all need to chill out !! #imTru

Having failed that, he decided to end on a Biblical note.

I thought after Noah’s Ark & the great flood, God said he wouldn’t punish us again..well how do u explain what happen 2nite ?! Ijs #PoWwWwW

Like Belichick, Spikes can expect a fine from the league, who recently warned all teams about intimidating the scab officials. Presumably that includes using social media.

It’s understandable to be upset over, let’s face it, a pretty crappy way to lose a game. However, it doesn’t excuse Belichick from placing his hands on somebody or Spikes foolishly claiming God is trying to punish the team. It’s unfortunate that the negotiations with the regular referees continue to stall, but a certain level of professionalism must always be maintained, no matter the circumstance.

Both men broke that code, and soon will pay for it.
