Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips confirmed to FoxSportsHouston.com Friday night that he is pulling his name from consideration for the head coaching job of the Tampa bay Buccaneers. Phillips was scheduled to interview for the job in Houston Friday night. Number one, I want to be in Houston, said Phillips. Thats the biggest factor. I didnt want to be any kind of distraction or even perceived distraction. Taking an interview at this time, some people thought if we didnt do well, it was a distraction to the team. I dont want to be that at all. The Texans are scheduled to meet the ravens in a divisional playoff game Sunday in Baltimore. Phillips did get some criticism from some Texans fans for interviewing for another job during the first ever playoff run for the franchise. Asked if he will turn down any other offers to interview, Phillips said he would not interview during the playoffs. Right now, while were in the playoffs, said Phillips. That would be the case for sure. Phillips turned what was arguably the worst defense in the NFL in 2010 into the second ranked unit in the league in terms of yards allowed per game. The Texans are allowing 17.4 points per game, fourth best in the NFL.
