PITTSBURGH - 2009: Ramon Foster of the Pittsburgh Steelers poses for his 2009 NFL headshot at photo day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by NFL Photos)

Every year, Pittsburgh Steelers fans clamor for a changing of the guard along the offensive line. This year the organization listened and spent three draft choices on offensive linemen, including two David DeCastro and Mike Adams that may see solid playing time in 2012. This begs the question, are all changes good and beneficial? One look at game film from 2011 will reveal that offensive right guard Ramon Foster was one of more consistent offensive linemen last season. Now, with the addition of DeCastro and the move of Willie Colon to left guard, Foster appears to be the odd man out. Sure DeCastro looks like a potential decade-long starter inside, and his selection was really a no-brainer, but the team really needed a left guard more than a right guard.

Last season, left guard was a revolving door and definitely needed an upgrade and honestly at this point, no upgrade is truly in place. Colon definitely projects better inside at guard, but the former right tackle has spent almost two full seasons on injured reserve and is more of a question mark at this point than a sure thing. While Foster is not the sexiest answer to the left guard solution, he may be best option. The former undrafted rookie free agent from Tennessee is a mauler, who is more consistent than flashy. Sure, he will not wow anyone with athleticism, but he is assignment steady and was far from the weak link along the front line.

As fans prepare for the opening of training camp, the battle (if there is one) between Colon and Foster at left guard may be the one to watch throughout preseason. Honestly, the Steelers need to solidify the line early, and Colons’ injury history should make everyone skeptical on his validity for an entire season. Couple that with the uncertainty at left tackle, and there is need for concern for the left side of the offensive line.

Yes, fans have been excited by the names, draft choices and focus on the trenches, but maybe they should temper the expectations a bit. Replacing solid players for the sake of change may not be the way to go and a player like Foster may be more important than fans believe.
