According to Fox News Pittsburgh Steelers’ nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu is set for trial on Thursday stemming from his arrest in October. The Steelers drafted Ta’amu in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Washington. Ta’amu was considered one of the top nose tackle prospects in last years draft and when he was still on the board early in the fourth round the Steelers traded up to select him. However, after only a couple months with the team Ta’amu was arrested on the South Side of Pittsburgh on October 14 after crashing into several other cars and then running away from police who responded to the incident. Following the incident the Steelers suspended Ta’amu for two weeks and they later cut him. They did, however, sign him to their practice squad and he later made it back to the 53-man roster. Fox News reported Ta’amu as being a former-Steelers, but he is still currently on the roster at this time. On Thursday Ta’amu faces felony charges of aggravated assault by vehicle and fleeing and eluding police, as well as misdemeanor charges including resisting arrest, escape and drunken driving. This is Ta’amu’s second DUI arrest; he was also arrested for DUI while playing at Washington. As of now the Steelers have three nose tackles on their roster including Ta’amu. Long-time starter Casey Hampton is a free agent and 2012 back-up Steve McLendon is expected to start in 2013. The Steelers also signed Hebron Fangupo off of waivers late last season when he was released by the Seattle Seahawks. If Ta’amu receives a heavy sentence or time in jail, which is a possibility, the Steelers could cut him for a second time. In that case they would have to target a nose tackle in the draft or entertain the idea of bringing back Hampton for one last season. As of now they will just have to keep an eye on Ta’amu’s trial and see what happens.
