Saturday August 10 the Pittsburgh Steelers open their preseason against the New York Giants. When it comes to the first week of the preseason the expectations are different then what it would be in a normally game situation. Teams usually don’t play all of their starters and those who do get to see game action are out there for a limited time and don’t really have much of an impact.
In this first game there are still a few things that I expect to see from the Steelers.
1. Good play from the offensive line.
The offensive line will be fully healthy and together and with a season under their belts together I expect the offensive to play good. In the off season the offensive line has gotten better by the fact that they have gotten healthy, despite the outside injury to tackle Mike Adams. While I don’t expect to see the starters out for long they should still be able to play well and especially open up holes in the running game. They will have a good first test with the Giants great pass rush and expect to see a real good competition at the start of the game.
2. Rookies stepping up big.
Preseason is the time that the rookies are able to make themselves known, and with the strong draft class that the Steelers had this year will have a huge impact on this game. The Steelers have had a philosophy in recent years of not starting rookies. In this game players like Le’Veon Bell and Jarvis Jones will be able to make their case for the Steelers changing that way of thinking. Other young players such as Shamarko Thomas and Marcus Wheaton will be showing that they can be quality back ups, and that they will be house hold names in Pittsburgh in the coming years.
3. Improvement in Todd Haley’s offense.
Todd Haley is coming into his second season now as the Steelers offensive coordinator. This season the spotlight is going to be hot and almost every play that he is calls will be under scrutiny. In this game expect to see a more developed Steelers offense that will feature a strong run game between the battling running backs and a more variety of passes.
Football is finally back!

Now that it looks like Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth will be lost for the season with due to a Lisfranc injury, the tight end position really got a lot thinner than it already was. There’s still some hope in my eyes, however. I wrote recently about how I expect offensive coordinator Todd Haley [...]

Mike Tomlin most certainly won’t be the last head coach the Pittsburgh Steelers have as one day his time in the Steel City will come to end. When that day finally does come, you can rest assured there won’t be another one like him. Tomlin, whose post training camp practice sessions with the media very [...]

It’s just not the Pittsburgh Steelers way to use a ‘backfield by committee’ and running backs coach Kirby Wilson won’t lend any credence to it. Wilson wants a running back that can play from first down through third down – point blank. That’s why when the Steelers match up against the New York Giants, RB Le’Veon Bell will get the rock early and often.
According to Wednesday official NFL transaction release, undrafted free agent running back Curtis McNeal was waived injured by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bob Labriola reported on the Wednesday edition of Steelers Live that the USC product had an unspecified injury. McNeal had been sidelined the last few days of practice prior to the Tuesday off day. [...]

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette now reports that Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth has Lis Franc sprain and is expected to be out 8-10 weeks. This doesn’t sound like it will end his season like the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported as being possible, but the Steelers might be forced to use the injured reserve [...]

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress tore his rotator cuff in practice Thursday, which could end his season and possibly his career. According to ESPN, Burress landed awkwardly on his right arm while trying to make a catch over defensive backs DaMon Cromatie-Smith and Ryan Steed. He walked off the
By Matthew Marczi For quite a while, I had been holding out hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers would carry five running backs in addition to fullback Will Johnson. My hope was contingent upon the theory that fourth-year back Jonathan Dwyer would be the odd man out should the team only carry four backs because he [...]

According to several media reports, veteran wide receiver Plaxico Burress was carted off the practice field Thursday with an injured shoulder or elbow. Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider reports that Burress went up for a ball against cornerback Ryan Steed and safety DaMon Cromartie-Smith and fell on his arm after being out jumped. Head [...]

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed veteran receiver Plaxico Burress at the start of the off-season. His season, and career, now seem like they could be over due to a torn rotator cuff injury that is likely to push him onto injured reserve. That means that the Steelers have lost one of their two seasoned veterans at wide receiver, the other being Jerricho Cotchery, so time to panic...
Due to all the injuries the Pittsburgh Steelers had last year at the running back position during training camp they wound up claming DuJuan Harris off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars in late August to play in the final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. Harris, who rushed for 45 yards on 12 carries in [...]
