While Plaxico Burress was greeted with a ‘thanks, but no thanks’ by the Panthers, whom he recently expressed interest in playing for, his former team was the topic of conversation Thursday.

During an appearance on ESPN, Plax spoke on the Jets — specifically, Mark Sanchez — and was asked if the embattled quarterback can lead the Jets to a Super Bowl. After a bit of ducking and dodging, he replied, “Well, they paid him so they think he can.”

Pressed further, Burress was asked what he thinks. His answer: “I think the defense can.”

Ouch. It may not have been a blatant and obvious criticism, but it’s not difficult to infer what he’s saying — or, rather, what he didn’t say.

Much like fellow receiver Santonio Holmes, Burress didn’t appear to be on the same page with Sanchez for much of the 2011 season. Save for his prowess inside the 20, which catapulted the Jets near the top of the league in redzone offense, Burress often appeared out of position and the two never displayed solid chemistry.

Although that can be attributed to Sanchez, who continued to struggle with his accuracy, some of the blame has to be placed on Burress, who looked every bit his age and seemed to have lost his separation and playmaking ability. He also developed a poor habit of lazily running routes when his number wasn’t called, and that speaks directly to his attitude.

We’ll never know how both players would’ve fared in a second season together, but let’s put it this way: There’s a reason why New York rewarded Sanchez with an extension, and didn’t choose to bring back the former Super Bowl hero.
